Some weeks ago, I wrote asking for advice for things to do with my blind infant. In the interveneing weeks, life has taken on an exciting and wondrous pace.
Jayla was diagnosed with primitive light reflex only and it was thought that there was nothing to be done to augment that. At 10 weeks, she saw an opthalmologist who, after doing lots of testing, decided to try some lenses - hello!!!
It turns out that Jayla is massively long-sighted (possibly +8.5) with astigmatism. When born, she was unable to focus and so her brain did not lay down the neural pathways necessary to develop sight. You only have until 12 weeks for them to do this or they remain cortically blind. At 15 weeks, she is now seeing and has caught up on all her other physical milestones.
Our discovery was totally God-driven (I just went along for the ride), but the moral of the story is to pray and seek other opinions and, please, remember the 12 week rule.
