HI all!
My little guy was just retested after twelve months going to Kennedy Krieger's CARD for speech and language therapy. We got the results although I expect it will take three or four months to get the actual report.
Receptive vocabulary : up 23 months
Expressive vocabulary: up 9 months
Receptive language: up 27 months
Expressive language: up 16 months
I think homeschooling is working!
Actually, the SLT agreed that our program of reinforcing her work on a daily basis is working. I also talked to her about his future school work. (Should I work at the level of his receptove vocabulary or his receptive language skills with extra work on vocabulary? We agreed on the latter.) I am very pleased with this improvement although he is still very far behind. (Being in the .4 percentile in an area is only great if you were at <.1 percentile before.)
However, I find a huge change in my ability to read him stories above the toddler level and in his ability to learn from and attend to words. He got so much more out of a trip to the local pumpkin farm this year than last.
Anyway, we're happy.
In Christ,
Deborah

Mary,
Thanks! Actually, I was thinking after all this testing that if I weren't homeschooling, these results wouldn't have happened. It's only because we homeschool that we can get to CARD on a weekly basis without sacrificing three hours or more of school time each time. It's only because we homeschool that I can have a rich and generous special ed curriculum.... It's only because we homeschool that he can have a curriculum targeted at his needs. It's only because we homeschool that he can have a Catholic education as no Catholic school would ever accept him.
Thank you, Jesus.
In Christ,
Deborah
who hopes her little guy will receive his FHC in a year or two.....

Tricia,
CARD is Center for Autism and Related Disorders, a part of Kennedy Krieger. If you live anywhere near Baltimore, it's worth investigating.

Debora

Tricia,
Hhhmmm. It's hard to think of a place further from Baltimore than Australia. Well, I hope you find similar help there.
I'm now wondering where my Australian cousins are.... (first cousins once removed and their descendents). I should ask my mom since she visited them around the time my little guy was born. (In fact we called Australia to let her know; unfortunately, the desk clerk gave the message to wrong woman -- a woman who was childless...)
In Christ,
Deborah
