Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My 9-yo son has begun a new unit based around a little gem of a Goodwill find called Great Commanders and their Battles. The plan is to read about each commander, adding a few other good library books about these historical figures and their times, to journal as he goes and especially to draw the battle maps. Sounds fun for this little man! The only thing lacking is a nice historical novel for him to be reading as he goes. He just finished a unit on WWI, and reading The Singing Tree and The Silver Donkey (both great recommendations from these forums) really boosted him out of the Hardy Boys rut he was in. Can anyone recommend something comparable so he doesn't revert? Right now the topic is Alexander the Great and the Battle of Gaugamela, next is Scipio Africanus and the Battle Zama. My searches for historical fiction or otherwise which include either figure or either battle have come up empty. Thanks in advance!

Editing to add - "meaty" is perhaps a strong word. He is 9, after all. But you all know what I mean. There is a time and a place for the Hardy Boys, but he is progressing and I want to keep it up!

Can't help you with fiction for Scipio Africanus and the Battle Zama but these may be covered in Famous Men of Rome-Haaren & Poland, The Story of the Romans- Guerber or On the Shores of the Great Sea- Synge?

When reading your amazon link and the Commanders you will be later reading I thought of (for later):

Midshipman Quinn- Showell Styles Bethelehm book, ages 9-12 (or older) Set in the Napoleonic war.
Flying Ensign - showell Styles A Bethlehem book, but may be too old for him. Also in Napoleon war.

I haven't read either of the following Demi books, but I'd imagine they would be worthwhile.

Alexander the Great
Genghis Khan - demi

Have you looked into the World Landmark series? These are out of print, but have some of the "big names" of ancient history.

Below is a Word Doc file of the World Landmarks. It's arranged in chronological order.

I haven't organized the regular landmarks, except for this file:

Thank you, ladies! I have already found the Demi Alexander the Great at our local library, and I'm working on the World Landmark series. Gems!
