My 5yo DS is supposed to have crunchy or chewy foods for breakfast to provide oral motor stimulation first thing in the morning. He also needs a good hit of protein or he is cranky and hungry an hour later.

But I'm drawing a complete mental blank on foods that are both crunchy/chewy and high protein.

Any ideas?

Sara, what about a toasted multigrain bagel with cream cheese or peanut butter? My 5yo gets quite a workout gobbling up his bagel every morning.

How about homemade granola bars made with peanut butter? Or other nut butters if allergies are a concern.

I make homemade granola and then mix extra protein powder or powdered milk into it before serving with...milk!

Also, my middle son used to have oral sensory issues. We fed him a lot of fishsticks (yes, even for breakfast).

Sometimes I'll make breakfast burritos with scrambled egg, and/or refried beans, tomatoes, olives, cheese. How about all that in a crunchy taco shell instead of in a soft tortilla? Or scrambled egg and bacon in a soft tortilla might be crunchy?

I had a couple of more ideas:
crackers or melba toast with ham and cheese
crackers or melba toast with pb&j
grilled ham and cheese
grilled pb&j
toast with eggs
jerky and eggs

Whole grain crackers and cheese, and an orange.
That's what Aidan's been having most mornings these days.
Or granola and milk.   You could add a bit of protein powder to the milk.
Or crunchy peanut butter on crisp toast.
