Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I find that this is a good time to think about what has gone RIGHT during the past year and what to ponder for next year. Does anyone have a success story to share in regards to their special blessing?

Aidan is going to be 6 next month, is developmentally delayed after a stroke in infancy, which also left him with with left hemiparesis, ie weakness and extra tone in his left side. Early in 2004 he was able to have his VP shunt removed (a cerebral shunt because he also acquired hydrocephalus during the stroke).

In the past year he has made a LOT of progress.   He is eating his food by mouth rather than by feeding tube, he is trying to run, and he is much more interactive than he used to be. His behavior is still repetitious and sort of patterned, but he cooperates and imitates FAR more than he did a year ago. When he shows withdrawn tendencies, extremely stereotypical behavior we know it's usually because he's very tired or not feeling well.

He can now "read" a few letters, can draw circles and lines, has memorized several books and songs, and the other day picked up beads and a pipe cleaner that the OT brought, and successfully threaded them on his own initiative. He would not have been capable of that kind of focus and persistence just a few months ago.

He's also now MOSTLY able to sit through a Mass without hooting or laughing or talking, which is a big improvement.

Finally, he is becoming 3/4 consistent in his toilet training.   The other 1/4 is the goal for this summer
and a side benefit would be to train my 2.5yo at the same time!
