Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I am asking for prayer for my little girl. We have had an especially difficult week. You can read about her
here.
I don't know if it is because she is getting older and can better release her emotions or our losing a kitten that triggered some difficult feelings or maybe both.    Thank you.
Love,
Margaret

Margaret, as the mom of 5 adopted children, 4 of whom are Chinese, I can really relate to your struggle. My oldest dd, 15 and home 8 years, has reactive attachment disorder and mothering her is the hardest thing I have ever done. Two of my other children have anxious attachment issues, but only the 15 year old has rejected us time and again, and has suffered PTSD from her orphanage experiences. Finally we have found a good attachment therapist and have made at least behavioral strides forward, but we have the deep, deep sadness of knowing that we have not touched her heart. Last Christmas was so hard--second year in a row she destroyed all her gifts. Have you ever seen a violin reduced to unreconizable matchsticks?

We truly believe that God gave her to us and so we rely on Him for grace and strength, but in my humanness, it is so very very hard to be discarded in the role that I most treasure, that of mother.

Our other two with difficult early experiences do truly love us and receive our love, and we are so blessed. I ache to think of the times they were so very tiny and felt alone and unloved and terrified. Each day I pray to be an instrument of healing in the lives of all my children.

If you'd like to email or talk off-list, maybe we could encourage one another and share helpful resources. A couple of great books that help me alot are Different But Equal by Patricia McLaughlin, and The Science of Parenting by Margot Sunderland. Oh, and another is Adoptive Parenting from the Ground Up by Katie Prigel Katzer. A great online resource is a yahoogroup called ADN_Parents (stands for attachment disorder network--a very supportive and encouraging group).

I sometimes half-joke only to God that this must be part of my Purgatory, but I do really know that mothering this girl is part of God's plan for holiness for me. And parenting all my children through the residual effects of early traumas has taught me so much about God's love and His mercy.

Much love and prayer for your family,
Mary Alice in Kansas

p.s. Margaret, you mentioned losing a kitten. A common trigger for PTSD reactions in our kids is a loss. Often for them it is one loss among many, and it stirs up so many feelings of fear, anger, helplessness, and even despair. Last year when our beloved Golden Retriever died, the most securely attached of my children (adopted at 1 month of age, breastfed and attachment parented all this time) totally lost it about 3 days later and had a several-hour meltdown, sobbing as if her heart would break about "why didn't my birthmother want me", refusing to come near me while I sat on the floor near her and very softly spoke to her underneath her keening sobs, and finally climbing onto me and nearly under my skin for comfort. We were both exhausted by then. But she knows in a new way that I'm a safe place for all her feelings, and I'm her Mom.

You and your little one have my prayers.
I am often surprised at the things that will trigger a reaction in a child that suffers from early trauma. Some things, like a loss, you kind of expect a reaction and see it coming. And sometimes it seems to come right out of the blue, blindsiding you. I don't think I will ever fully understand what goes on in their little wounded souls.
But thank God your little one has you to help her through.

Praying for you. I have so much respect for people who adopt children. Having read your post and Mary Alice's post, I have to say I think you are both just awesome.

Thank you all for your prayers. I felt uplifted just knowing of the powerful intercession on our behalf. You all truly bring blessing. Today was the first day she has had a little relief. However, as I well know, life with her is a roller coaster ride. I would appreciate your continued prayers.
Love,
Margaret

Margaret and Mary Alice,

You are precious, precious mothers, I am so inspired by you.

Margaret I pray for your family.

Mary Alice,
I can only begine to imagine the heartache you go through as you long for your dd to return your love. Deep down she does I pray it won't be long before she is brave enough to admit it.
