My almost 4 year old is very difficult to understand. I brought this up at her 3 year well child check, but the pediatrician told me that all children develop speech at different rates. This may be true, but one of my older children has high frequency hearing loss and the two of us visited a speech pathologist for a year (between ages 3 and 4), teaching her the sounds she does not hear (last year was the first year that her hearing did not regress  ).
I have been working with and praying for my almost 4 year old, but there are some sounds that she either isn't hearing or has a hard time forming (s, sh, ch, th, f, etc.). She does pronounce certain sounds that my other child did not.
Anyway, to my point, my child's four year well child check is coming up. I will be speaking to the pediatrician again. I am thinking a little ahead, but if she recommends visiting a speech pathologist, I do not know how I will be able to do it. How do those of you with several children handle regular doctor visits? I could not afford a babysitter once a week and my mom is no longer around to help out.

All three of my children have had speech therapy. My youngest had it in home through the state, which was lovely and oh-so-convenient 
When my middle child had speech and PT, it was in office 2x week for 2 hours. My older son was 5, and the youngest was a baby. The office had toys and books available, and I would usually bring a snack. It was challenging at times, but we survived!

Unfortunately, there is nowhere for my children to wait in the office, while I am with the child receiving speech therapy (nursing babies are permitted in the room). My insurance doesn't cover in home speech therapy. Thank you for the prayers. I don't usually worry about things like this beforehand, but for some reason I am this time.

What are the ages of your children, particularly the one that might receive therapy?

My children range in age from 1 to 8. The one who will most likely be receiving therapy will be 4 next month.

Can speech therapy be done at home by mom? I was wondering if there were some books out on the subject...

I think this can be more feasible depending on the type of speech issue being treated.
Christine, will you need to be with the 4 y/o for every session, or do they just require your presence to help acclimate your child? If they want you to be present for every session, I would definitely discuss it with the therapist and let them know that this is a hardship for you.
Is there maybe another therapy room that's not being used during your session, where you could set up your dc? They're usually very kid-friendly...
I'm guessing the 8 y/o would be okay while you were in the session, the 1 y/o will be with you and the 4 y/o. What about the other 2?
Is there no waiting room at all? If there's a small one, is it very far from where the session would be?
If all else fails, is there another facility that you can use?
Just some thoughts...

Sorry, I have taken a while to respond. I will need to spend 1 hour each week with my daughter and the speech pathologist (I agree with this approach, as it worked very well with my oldest). My 1, 5, 7, and 9 year olds would not be allowed in the room with us. When the baby is born, he will be.
I have been wondering about trying Straight Talk available from NATHHAN. However, not having any reviews makes me unsure. I have been working with my 4-year-old, for a year, but I have not made any real headway.
I often have to tell her, "I am sorry but I don't understand what you are saying" and then try to work with her so that I can figure out what she is trying to say. I have noticed this summer that she doesn't speak when we are around friends (she does around extended family) and it is definitely not a shyness issue.
I just wish the doctor had listened to me a year ago when my dad was still living here. If she had, I wouldn't be worrying about how to afford a babysitter once a week and my little girl most likely wouldn't be experiencing her current frustrations.

Hi Christine,
I have had two that needed therapy; one speech, one occupational.
I believe every state has a program called "Child Find" or something similar where they will do the testing for free and then help you find resources. They usually test for more than just speech and hearing, they will test for all types of learning problems.
Normally if the child is under 3 they do the therapy but if the child is 3 or older they refer you to the public school system. Many will provide the therapy in your home.
One of mine had therapy at the local elementary school (we lived in Virginia) and the other had it in home (in New Mexico).
Something else you might look into is finding a homeschooled teen in the area that might be willing to sit for you at a reasonable rate.
I might also check to see if there is another provider that has a more kid friendly office or Satuday hours so maybe DH could sit with the kids. 
I will say some prayers that all works out.

I have had this problem with therapy. I have "borrowed" a young teenager from a friend and brought them with me to play games with the other kids in the waiting room. bring some play-doh and lollipops (a forbidden treat here) and tell your "babysitter" to just do whatever it takes to keep them quiet and happy. Sometimes she took the littler ones for a walk around the block in the stroller and the big ones walked with her.
I would give my dear babysitter a few dollars or a special treat at Christmas/birthdays. She regarded it a good experience for when she was babysitting on her own. Call it babysitting training.
Do you know any nice 12 or 13 year olds??
