I just started my 30 day trial at Typepad last night, so I may have many questions for you. I've been trying to read all the old blog posts to check what's already been answered. My first question is: why do some people use nicknames for themselves, dh and dc and others seem to use real names?

Wow! Congratulations and welcome to the world of blogging Cheryl!!
My answer is mainly because some want to and some don't Personally, I decided to nick-name my dc for security reasons, although I do post an occaisional photo of them, but for me it was just a personal preference, and they actually think it kind of fun!
They also have their own private blogs and are using their alias as an online protection, password protected blogs, etc.
For me they are like characters in my online world, only I know they are real!! Have fun getting started and ask away if you need any more help.

Cheryl,
I look forward to reading your new blog!
I cannot answer for others, but for my blog, I followed Meredith's lead and gave my children pseudonyms. For my two of my children, their blog names are related to their real names and the other three are the names I gave them that my husband would not agree to. IRL, I could never have named our children names that we were not in agreement on, but my husband is really not concerned with blog names. Our children, however, are excited to see themselves blogged about, but they try to get me to change their blog names to ones they think of . When I first started blogging about them (I often begin to compose my posts after they are asleep) it did not occur to me to get them involved. I won't make that mistake again.
Blessings,

I gave nicknames to mine originally out of concern for their privacy. I am feeling less and less like it is necessary, and ds real name has appeared on my blog a few times on some of his work, but I still feel a bit reluctant to use their real names on a regular basis. Not really sure why. These are nicknames that we often called our dc anyway, so it isn't really that odd for me to use them.

Hi Cheryl,
I started my blog in March with nicknames for the kids and dh ("dh") and NO pictures. I even went so far as to change my signature here at the board because I had their names in it and I thought since I link here so often someone could find out their names this way ... kind of silly because I don't think people are reading me that closely! We still use the nicknames mainly because the kids get such a kick out of them. And if you've seen my blog you see that I've also lightened up about the pictures.
I am looking forward to seeing your blog! Good luck with it!!

I went ahead and used real names, we'd definitely use the name of our boat, S/V Mari Hal-O-Jen in the blog, and it would take only the slightest amount of effort to figure out who Mari, Hal and Jen are!
Add to that family members who comment 'Oh Marianna is getting so big!' and I'd have to turn off alot of comments that are pretty harmless (imo) My server won't let me alter comments only turn them on or off, yours may be different and you could follow after changing names to nicknames I suppose...
As far as pictures are concerned, first of all I look at my blog as a great way to share with family members who are spread over kajillions of miles so always keeping faces turned away would be almost a disservice to the point of the blog, and second there are enough wild pictures in MySpace to occupy meanies for a long time. I just really don't feel that a picture of Marianna in her dingy is going to be altered and appear in STAR or something! (I know it is possible, but is it likely???)
Just a few java fueled thoughts this morning. Good luck with your blog Cheryl!

Last night we had a power outage from about 8-11pm so I didn't get a chance to work on my blog. I just nursed and read by candlelight instead. After awhile I couldn't read anymore. How did people survive without electricity?
Thanks for your responses. I decided to go with the nicknames our family members made for each other a few years ago, even though they could be getting old. I'm going to use my dh's real name because Bobby is shorter than "Drive-on Daddy." I had to make up one for baby Rachel. When I told my ds 7 about the nicknames, he said he wanted to change his to "Nick". I'm not going to do that though, because He'll probably want to keep changing it. I do plan on sharing pictures of us. That is after I learn how to work my dh's digital camera.
My next question is: How long did you tweak your blog before you posted the link to it here?

I've had mine for one month...and I'm still tweaking . I posted my link 2 days after I set up my blog.

I only had mine for a couple of days when I posted about Alice's blog, and she left me a comment! I was so excited I put out the word, even though things were still "under construction."
