Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Hello,

I have been an inactive member for over a year (couldn't find my way back to the forums!). The need to learn more became greater so here I am.

I have been homeschooling my 12 yo ds for 2 1/2 years now. This year we added his 10 yo ds and coming soon we will formally add 5 yo ds also.

During our time in the public school arena we gained the labels of ADD, dyslexic, CAP disorder among some others not formally 'diagnosed'. We have been the route of medicating and not medicating. I don't mind the labels so much. Carol Barnier explains why in her book How to Get Your Child off the Refrigerator...

The first two years for ds being home was spent mostly allowing him to heal. I had hoped he would learn to love to learn again - but that hasn't really happened.

The reason I want to come to this forum more now is to hopefully pull my own boot straps up and create more of a 'real learning' environment for our family. I feel like what we have been doing has really been haphazard and it is time to get more serious about it. Not serious in the sense that I defeat the purpose of CM style learning - but just have more of a sense of what we're doing and where we're going. A road map for the rabbit trails, so to speak.

Does any of that make sense to anyone? I hope to gain much from the wisdom of this wonderful group.

Thanks!

Susan

Dear Susan
It does make sense! I think you are looking to create a more purposeful environment. And it sounds like the time is right for it in your home. I'm so glad you're going to let us share in the creation!

Susan,
Welcome back!   It sounds like you are going about it the right way. Please ask any questions or share concerns; there is a lot of collected wisdom on the board.

Thank you for the warm welcome and encouragement!

I realized after reading my original post I only half introduced myself... We are a military family living (and hopefully retiring) in IL - metro St. Louis. DH and I have been married for 22 years this upcoming June 30. We have 5 children ranging in ages from 5 to 20. I converted to the faith 12 years ago.

DH and I both love to cook, garden and entertain with friends and family. And we no longer love to move as we once did .

Elizabeth - "purposeful" was the perfect word and exactly what my aim was without realizing it. Thank you for helping me clear away the fog.

Blessings!

Susan
