Hi! Need help while the search engine is down.
Can you help me out with some insect books? I'm preparing an insect study for my 2nd grader and found these lesson plansfrom Orkin. (One of the plans suggests books, but they fail to provide the list so I need to discover my own.)
I have Fabre's Insect book, but was wondering if there are others that you enjoy.

I know that it's frustrating without the search feature working properly. It is possible to search 4 Real using Google Advnaced search in the interim. So I pulled up some of the main threads that might help.
Bugs/Spiders day camp ideas
Picture Books About Insects
Eric Carle Ideas - thread has a lot about insects since several of his books are insect books.
Field Guides & Resources:
Insect Field Guides?
Bug Identification Resources
Some threads focusing on specific insects:
Butterflies for Littles
Butterfly book recommendations
The Very Quiet Cricket
Bee Picture Books
Bees
Caterpillar Books Needed
And a few quotes form some threads that weren't specifically on insects:

Insects in Our World, part of the Whitman World Library (1963). Awesome book for insect loving kids -- lots of text and good illustrations. |

Buzz is an amazing insect book.
I love finding a new treasure at the library unexpectedly. Wasn't looking for insect books but they had this one on the display shelf and it looked intriguing. It's a newly published DK book. I love how they format books, very eye-catching and appealing to readers. Has three sound disks imbedded in the front cover that when pushed sound like insects (bee, cricket, mosquito) - fun right from the start. It covers a variety of arthropods (not just insects) and helps you to tell the differences between them. It's a combination of resources - part I spy and visual discrimination games(camouflage, spot the difference, match baby with adult), game book (card and board samples), AMAZING fun facts/trivia (medical uses, strength and jumping ability comparisons to humans, weird homes, top insect pets, chemical warfare), science, history (silk worms, red dyes, Austria & dung beetles), recipes (all about edible insects), insect related jobs, insect inspired things. FYI, some evolution references at very beginning when it discusses where insects came from.
I really can't do it justice. It is just a very fun book. Sure to keep budding entomologist totally engaged! |

I do this also with Catholic Culture, since their search engine doesn't work and I *Know* something is there, like an author
Type in the box of the search engine:
site:http://siteaddress search term
So, if I'm searching insects for 4Real
site:http://4real.thenetsmith.com insects
If you are looking for a certain search term more than one word put in parentheses.

Thanks Jenn, for posting the search how-to since I couldn't get back to this earlier.
I also wanted to highlight again a couple activity books I recommended in one of the above old threads, but didn't want them to be lost in the old threads.
Insectigation: Insectigations: 40 Hands-on Activities to Explore the Insect World
Bug Hunter
On Amazon I am just seeing this book by Charles Micucci. I didn't know he had one on ants. I've recommended the one on bees before but this one is more recently published and I didn't know about it. His books are really fun and I love the illustration style.

Jenn, thanks for the tip--I have found the search feature on Catholic Culture to be a bit buggy myself.
Another suggestion that you can pic up cheaply used now that it is OOP is Creepy Crawlies and the Scientific Method.
For picture books I really love Bugs by Joan Richards Wright.

Oh yes, that is a good one. It also reminded me of the Gail Gibbons books. She has a few on insects. I think she does a really good job of presenting these topics.

Thanks for all the help. We are going to have fun with this unit! When I was at the library, I also came across one of their "curriculum kits" for Pre-K on insects. How appropriate! It's full of fun picture books, a cd, life cycle pictures to put in order, and a fun insect memory game. I love our library!

Some newly published insect books from outstanding nature author/illustrators.
The Beetle Book (Steve Jenkins)
Classic Jenkins illustrations which are always fun and engaging. This book focuses solely on beetles (which by the way make up 1 in 4 living organisms from plant & animal kingdoms). Actually kind of creepy...
Creep and FLutter (Jim Arnosky)
Amazing fold-out pages with vivid color illustrations. Copeously detailed with facts about each insect. In addition to the colorful fold-outs there are some side illustartions in black and white that look like sketches from a nature journal - nice models for journaling.
Both books show shadow/silhouettes in actual size. Interesting to compare.

Bumping this old thread. I'm looking for a living chapter book for 2nd grade on insects.
The Tarantula Scientist by Sy Montgomery is the provisional book suggested by Mater Amabilis for 1A, Year 1.
Jack's Insects is said to be for grades 4-6.
How about Fabre's Insects? What grade reading level would that be?

I went with this book about Henry Fabre, Children of Summer. It is out of print, though it looks like it is less expensive now than it was when I bought it last year.
