Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Our 11-year-old has had a very challenging time learning to read. We took him to various specialists at one point (optometrist, audiologist, speech therapist) but we've never had an official diagnose. It's been a slow process but he's doing much better and his reading has improved tremendously. We've been using All About Spelling for the past year or so, but he does not have the best memory so the basic rules have not always stuck as much as they should. About a month ago, I purchased the computer program, Reading Horizons and I've been very pleased. When I called their 800 #, they gave me a code for a 25% discount for homeschoolers. My son really enjoys the decoding part and it has really helped him get a better handle on "phonemic awareness". I do the review exercises with him to reinforce difficult words but he's mostly able to do the program on his own. With All About Spelling there was more of a time commitment on my part, but we'll probably use it again when he's done with Reading Horizons, at least for more difficult words.

Between Reading Horizons and Great Leaps (which is a program for reading fluency), he's almost at grade level in his reading ability!
