Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Hi Moms~

We've been starting with reading here in the house...completely "delight-driven" by my 4.5 year old.

However, she has been able to spell her name and other words for the last year or so...

Is it common for a young child to consistently spell their name backwards?

She was working with letter beads yesterday, and I asked her to put them in alphabetical order (not all were there), and she struggled immensely...when I looked at what she was doing, the letters that she had put in "order" were either backwards or upside down...and letters were swapped for others...ie: "d" replaced" "b" and "q" replaced "d"...

I guess that activity has caused me the most concern...but I am thinking that it is early and she is still learning orientation?

Any advice?

Thank you!

Maggie

Maggie, children do this type of thing a LOT when they are young.

It's not until about age 8 (or 3rd grade) that you can really look at dyslexia as a possible problem. Up until then, children fall along a wide spectrum with orientation.

As far as alphabetizing, you might try limiting the # of letters that she works with each time.

She has plenty of time to work all of this out, so don't fret! Relax and enjoy the process.

Ditto what Tami says.....

I would have her doing lots of hands on stuff with letters......which sounds like what you are doing...you can also do magnetic letters on a pizza sheet...mine have always liked that....or a cake pan with rice, “drawing” letters in them.

She is really young....don’t worry yet, and don’t show any worry in front of her at this point.....you have plenty of time before you have to do that

Thank you! So glad I need not worry.

I'm new to this, but just read this week that dyslexia can be diagnosed as early as 5 years. There is a list of other persistent myths and pre-school warning signs and symptoms of dyslexia at Bright Solutions for Dyslexia.

Especially if there is dyslexia in the family tree - don't worry about it this early, but keep an eye on her.

Glad this thread got "bumped" with Stephanie Q's advice...we're sensing this may be a possibility with one of our kiddos. Just did some online research, and will be having him tested ASAP! Thanks!
