My waiting-to-be-evaluated-for-autism child, he just turned 5 last month, will no longer keep clothes on. He's always had this issue to a smaller extent, casting off shoes and socks mainly, but lately it has gotten to where he will discard his clothes most of the day...and night. If we are out somewhere, he will keep them on. I guess that's something. I've just ignored it, feeling like we have bigger fish to fry, and I don't find a naked 5yo particularly offensive. He tends to go through various phases and I figure he'll outgrow this one soon enough...probably once it gets good and cold! My mom though, who is usually pretty laid back, thinks he's too old for this and that I should discipline him for this and "put an end to it", so now I'm wondering if I should do something after all. Any thoughts on this?

If he is autistic, his stages may not be typical.. and so the whole "this age is _________" doesn't really apply imo.

That may be true; however, many people consider nudity inappropriate for any stage past birth (or bathing.)
I realize it may be difficult and presents certain challenges for some children, but I personally don't tolerate my children running around nude.

If there's a reason, he can't articulate it. He says he's too hot, but I don't think that's really it. It's COLD... We live in a drafty old house, and it's not warm now. His clothes are all pretty loose and comfy, mostly because he's a skinny thing, but also because he has a hard time with dressing and such so we tend to use easy on/easy off stuff. I don't see rashes or signs of irritation...I think he just finds it more comfortable to be naked,,,,hey, who wouldn't? barring concerns for modesty, of course.
He's generally immature, and I think that's part of it. Lots of toddlers go through a stripping stage, and he never did.
I'd say we're kind of middle ground on this. We don't tolerate the kids running around nude in general. I've just never had a stripping kid before. I'm not really sure what to do about it, and I'm not sure that it's really worth doing anything about right now either. At some point soon I hope to have him in occupational therapy and get some sensory integration stuff going, and I guess I'm hoping maybe that will help. I'm not sure how I'd deal with a stripping toddler either, you know? He has several issues that we don't really know how to deal with and that we are waiting for some input on. In the meantime...we are kind of on our own.

wish I had advice, but I don't ... although I can (and will) offer up a prayer for you and your little stripper. sounds like you're handling it well.
if it makes you feel any better, my 4 1/2 year old non-stripper recently and without any warning dropped her drawers in the middle of a crowded airport lobby. YIKES! so think of it this way: be thankful that your DS has some sense of public decorum ... and hopefully the evaluation/therapy will offer more info.
in the meantime, sending prayers.

Will your ds keep his underwear on, at least? I have a stripper who will be 7 soon. I did have some boundaries for her. She could not take her clothes off in public or outside but she could do this in our home. If she didn't want clothes on inside, she had to at least have underwear on. My dd is not autistic but has sensory issues. Just the feel of the clothes made her go snaky, plus she was always hot. The fights that ensued if I refused her were not worth it.
She does not do it very much anymore but, on occasion, she does strip down to the bare necessities.
Blessings,

He doesn't keep his underwear on...but I could probably work on that aspect of it, to at least keep that much on.
