We just found out this morning that our insurance won't cover the aid for my 4 year old. I think I'm more hurt than worried - because I know we can figure out a way to pay for it. There is a state mandate that insurance companies pay at least $1400 per ear towards aids for kids under 18, *unless* it's a self funded account, like ours is. They'll fund all sorts of horrible and unnecessary stuff, but not a child's hearing aid?
My dh is going to fight with his human resource dept, I'm sure he would appreciate prayers that they work with him on getting it covered. TIA.
When we do get it, I'm sure I'll be back with questions on that! (like can I duct tape it to my child's head to prevent it from getting lost? j/k)

Oh Amy, I can so relate!!! We made the same horrifying discovery last fall regarding our baby son's hearing aids. In our case, Early Intervention was able to help somewhat. They held a fundraiser, we raised some contributions on our own (thanks in large part to the behind-the-scenes efforts of the world's best friend, who drummed up far more support than I would ever have dared to ask for myself), and bit by bit we pulled together the (staggeringly high) sum needed. Insurance didn't pay a dime.
A couple of resources to check out--your local Lions Club chapter may be interested in contributing--the Lions have a special program specifically for providing hearing aids for children. There is also something called the Hike Fund, a group of college girls who raise money through hikes each year for assistive technology for hearing impaired children. They disperse funds only once a year, however, and we missed the cutoff last year for applying for Stevie.
Please feel free to email me if you want to bounce around other ideas.
As for keeping the aids in place--we have been very lucky--Stevie has been great since day one about leaving his alone. He loves them and brings me the storage case every morning so I can put them in. But if your little one objectrs to hers, there is lots of great advice on the Listen Up Yahoogroup--I'll look for the website as soon as I get my hungry gang fed! A little strip of toupee tape behind the ear works beautifully--you put a thin strip along the side of the hearing aid and the other side sticks tight to the skin, discouraging the child from pulling it out (ouch!). Or some people use little rubber band thingies called Huggie-aids or something like that. The expert parents at Listen Up know ALL the best tricks.
Best of luck to you! It's an adventure, all right!

How funny - we actually already have wig tape at home, since one of my other DDs has alopecia and has a wig, which she almost never wears (which insurance also didn't cover, lol, can't hurt to try though, huh?) Strange the things one becomes thankful for: "Hey, we found a use for the wig tape!" Thanks be to God I'm finding all this humorous, God is good!
Thanks so much for all that advice - I'll definitely be spending my computer time checking out all those resources. I think I actually joined 'no-mail' to the listen up group a few months ago - I need to check

Amy,
This doesn't concern hearing aids but my dh and I were able to get our self-funded health insurance to reverse a couple of decisions in our favor a while back after novenas. St. Gabriel is the patron of messages, St. Francis de Sales is the patron of the deaf, St. Joseph--families, and St. Agnes--girls.

Well either I'm more upset than I thought, or my lack of sleep is catching up to me. My dd is FIVE, almost six! not four I realized that as I was signing up for the "Listen Up" list, and almost said she was 4 again.
This from someone who said "you're six years old, it's OK that you can't write neatly yet" to her yesterday .... "um, Mom? I'm only 5."
