My 3 year old (July) has almost no language.
His older brother has Aspergers, so I am ever so slightly worried .
Does anyone know of a novena or saint for kids with delayed speech?
I had a quick google, with mixed results, so I thought someone was sure to know here
Thank you,
Tricia

Sorry I missed this before. Looking at the date, I must have been out of town in Alaska then.
It looks like Anthony of Padua is restorer of speech to the mute. Perhaps that's close enough? I can attest to his power in finding lost objects.
Here's one novena
O wonderful St. Anthony, glorious on account of the fame of your miracles, and through the condescension of Jesus in coming in the form of a little child to rest in your arms, obtain for me of His bounty the grace which I ardently desire from the depths of my heart . (State your intention)
You who were so compassionate toward miserable sinners, regard not the unworthiness of those who pray to you, but the glory of God that it may once again be magnified by the granting of the particular request (State your intention) which I now ask for with persevering earnestness. Amen
Pray one Our Father,
one Hail Mary, and
Glory Be to the Father, in honor of Saint Anthony.
Saint Anthony, pray for us!
from EWTN site (there are daily prayers you can say too).

Thanks so much Willa.
We are 17 days into the Miraculous 54 day Rosary Novena, which is a biggie for us as we are irregular in praying the rosary. We are certainly enjoying it, especially my dh who is a newish catholic.
I will certainly pray for St Anthony to interceed for Riley.

Hi Tricia
This is on the SpecialKidsMoms@yahoogroups.com <SpecialKidsMoms@yahoogroups.com>
SpecialKidsMoms@yahoogroups.com >***************
>I am running an ongoing novena to St Philomena for the healing of autism. I have a priest of Lourdes France, who prays each week for people (who have autism), whose name is submitted to be included in the novena. (Only the first name of the person is required).
>
>The details of the novena are at: http://www.homestead.com/missionbell/novenaforautisticchildr en.html
<SpecialKidsMoms@yahoogroups.com>
My husband and I pray to St Dymphna who is the patron saint of people with mental illness and mental disorders and St jude Thaddeus, case despaired of, not hopeless cases as some suggested for our HF autistic son and we are going to join this novena fo rour little boy.
I hope your fears concernig Riley are unfounded

Thanks for that Karnak,
I was have tried to find a suitable saint for autism, but hadn't thought of St. Dymphna or St Philomena. I'll have to go and find a little more out about them.
I may open a can of worms here, but I'm not sure that I would want Campbell (our aspie) to be cured as such, because so many of the things that contribute to who he is can not be seperated from Aspergers.I know of an adult aspie who gets rather upset when people suggest that there is something wrong with her and other ASD people. She suggests that we are the ones with problems, and sometimes I have to agree. Diversity should be celebrated.
Having said that we are very blessed in that he is on the mild end of the spectrum.I know that if he was more classically autistic I probably wouldn't have written the above. I hope no-one missunderstands or is offended.
What I do pray for thought is the grace to be a better parent when dealing with him.

Tricia,
You are right that many adult auties and aspies don't want to be "cured." (I have two ASD adult daughters and one minor ASD son.) However, it is certainly worthwhile to pray for the help they need to function at their best. However, I urge you to get your son some help right away. My son who is now seven had very little language (they couldn't get a basal at the 0-3 month level receptively when he was 2 years old!) God be praised, Kennedy Krieger has been wonderful. Of my ASD kids, he has the worst language skills, but he has been helped so much. We had to stop going for a couple of yeats (insurance issues), but he just finished his annual retesting and he has made fantastic progress in the last 12 months -- a 27 month gain in receptive vocabulary and gains everywhere else as well (no numbers on them as yet).
Btw, I also have a classically autistic brother. I know from his situation how important it is to work with them and not stop. My parents hadn't a clue until he was almost 12. Long story short -- he functions well below any of my children -- and yet I have to wonder -- what if he'd be born forty years later? What could he have learned? He gave up a long time ago. My only comfort is that he is truly innocent and can do nothing seriously wrong. I hope to have him baptized at some time in the future (if I can find a priest willing to baptize him-- some are kind of weirded out), and then I know that Heaven will be his. May the same (Heaven being ours) be true for all of us!
In Christ,
Deborah

Tricia,
I forgot to add that while he may not be canonized, one of St. Francis' companions (Br. Hyacinth IIRC) was probably on the spectrum. I wish I could find the orginal article I read about him -- he sounds as though he was on the spectrum.
Please excuse my typos here and above. I'm currently suffering from "allergy eyes" and am having a lot of trouble.
In Christ,
Deborah

I probaby should have given a lttile more info. on Riley. His speech pathologist thinks it's a behavioural problem, and we are inclined to agree, because the lang. difficulty is the only ASD type trait he shows. Occassionally he shows a little more interest in the washine machine or the fans than I would like! But he is very social, no sensory issues etc etc. I think my dh and I have made the mistake of not encouraging/forcing him to try and say something, becasue we could always work out what he wanted. The fact that he is very strongwilled doesn't help
He is on a waiting list for early intervention, which is a 1:3 teacher student ratio, but it might be 6 months plus before he gets a place. So much for "early" intervention In the mean time we will have to pay for private speech therery. The one he is seeing at the moment is through our health system,(we are very fortunate here is Aust.everyone has access to free health care) but we can only see her every 3 weeks.
So for now we will "stand on The Word" and pray for a healing, before we look at private speech therapy.
Thanks for sharing your story Deborah. You must have a huge ammount of knowledge about ASD. We are only just starting out as campbell was only dx 12 months ago. What a rollercoaster of emotions it's been!

Tricia,
I hope you get results from prayer.
Btw, I think Br. Juniper is the companion of St. Francis of whom I was thinking. A nifty book your son Campbell might enjoy is
Different Like Me: My Book of Autism Heroes.
I plan to get it when my ds is a little older.
In Christ,
Deborah
