Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I have been struggling with the issue of whether to potty train Christina (age 5 with Down syndrome) because she doesn't display what I've come to expect in terms of readiness. But this week, I took the plunge anyway, and will post updates on my blog

Best of luck!

What method are you using? My sister recommended this book that she used for her sons, but it is based on training a child with special needs, and is very helpful.

Praying for you!

Thanks for all your support and prayers. My potty training comes from the style of attachment parenting from Dr. William Sears. He has a son with Down syndrome, Stephen, who is now an adult. I asked him to write a parenting book about Down syndrome, but didn't get a response. We really need more books for these children!

I have also received suggestions from the various DS advocacy groups I belong to, and the technique of frequently taking them to the potty before they ask is what I'm currently following. It's exhausting, so I hope it begins to work soon!
Maybe I'll get the book your sister suggested, Fuzzy. Money is a problem for me when I'm not working at the college summers. My husband, whose mother trained 10 children without being able to read back home in El Salvador, thinks getting advice from a book is looney!
