Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I posted this on the Living Language Arts forum and decided to post this here as well. My 14 year old dd is struggling with writing ... always has for that matter. Her thoughts are very simple and it is so hard to "pull words out of her" to put down on paper. She is black and white. Descriptive language is "not her thing." I have always suspected some sort of "impairment" with this dd language arts skills. She struggled with learning to read, phonics, spelling and grammar early on and into the older elementary grades. I can't put my finger on it, but there are similar things that I have experienced with my oldest dd who is learning disabled. She reads a lot and listens to books on tape every day almost, so exposure to good writing is not the problem. Any ideas to help?? Thanks so much!

This is a GREAT DVD course. Wish I had it with my older kids.
I am a fairly decent writer and wish I had this when I was a kid!
VERY do-able.
Yours in Christ,
Kathy

Maria,
Were your 14-yr-old dd and my 14-yr-old ds separated at birth? What's her b-day?

Just joking.

I will be using Andrew Pudewa's writing course next year with ds. We'll do it together if we have to.

What I've done thus far with him to to have him select any subject he wants to write about. He has to give me a full page. In history we read a chapter together then he writes a paragraph summarizing it.

I try to make it painless for him and he does seem to be able to get it on paper but his punctuation is terrible. He still writes run-on sentences and incomplete sentences. But he talks that way too. He always has. There's something with the language flow that doesn't quite connect and he has trouble expressing himself...orally and otherwise.

Maria,

Do you want to work on expository or creative writing? If you're working on paragraphs and essays, I can heartily recommend Jansen's Format Writing. It has improved my ds's writing in an incredible way.

It's not creative writing or literary analysis...it's topic sentences, paragraph structure, different types of essays (persuasive, compare-and-contrast, etc.), book reports, business letters, things like that.

This one book has really, truly helped us. I admit I was surprised...but we're all so happy!

Yup. Here it is:

Jensen's Format Writing from CHC

I cannot say enough about this book. We did half of it this year (grade 9) as part of a grammar/essays/world lit curriculum and will finish next year. By then, I'm sure my son will be well-equipped for SAT essay writing.

I know many other suppliers also offer this book...just wanted to plug a Catholic supplier!
