Sorry if this topic has already been discussed, but we aren't sure what our
17 yr old son will be doing for school next year. I like a lot of CHC's other materials, and wondered what their high school program is like. I know it is very new, but has anyone on the forum used it yet? He was enrolled in MODG this year, and unfortunately it hasn't worked for our family. 
We're really trying to discern what program will be best for him.

I know some people just love HSOYD. I think I am one of the few who didn't. It was not what I was looking for at all. IMO, there are no real lesson plans, just a page of ideas relating to all the subjects that they list that are covered. Also -- I think it is wrong that they don't put up any sample pages at all, but since it is a "shrink wrap" item, you can't return it. I had actually originally ordered it the day it was released by CHC, as I had been anxiously awaiting it. I was disappointed, it was not what I was expecting at all. However, many, many other people I know really like it. Try to see if you can find someone local who has it so you could at least flip through it before you purchase your own copy.

What are you looking for? Do you want lesson plans with total flexibility to modify and help mapping out 4 years of college prep or do you need help or some ideas with documenting unusual courses? I think the answer to these questions will tell you whether or not you'll like HSOYD. Personally, I didn't care for it either. It is an idea book and I may reference it from time to time - but I was looking for more specific detail and not a find a local beekeeper to apprentice with kind of stuff. There was definitely useful information in HSOYD but just not what I really needed.

We've had a different experience; we use an umbrella school here in MD (we are military and move a lot; I wanted something accredited for that reason) and I used HSOYD plus a lot of research into college entrance requirements to plan a 4-year program. At the end of Grade 9, we're still doing most of what we'd planned... a little lighter on the electives than I'd have liked, but they add up over time.
I think you will find HSOYD frustrating without some outside research or help...I looked at entrance requirements for our state university system plus every school my son ever mentioned in a positive sentence. (That included schools in states with family members, service academies, stuff like that.) Once you know what colleges are looking for, it's easier to plan something that will mesh with your child's abilities and interests. It's then that HSOYD was helpful to me...it offered great resources and ideas for the subjects we selected.

I purchased HSOYD and view it as a reference tool. Like Laura, is was not what we were looking for; but neither was Seton which we used for English (a struggle, but a good one ) History(we dropped  ) and Biology which we love  Ah, well, the search continues...

I know this thank you is somewhat late, but I appreciate all the comments that were posted about HSOYD. It's good to hear both the positive and negative feedback. We did go ahead and buy it used, and I think it will be a
good fit for our family, especially our 17yr old who is fairly new to homeschooling. I was also glad for the links to previous reviews and discussions. There is a lot of helpful material there. Thanks again to all of you for your input!
