Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Aidan, who is 7, has two braces -- a DAFO (fitted orthotic) for his left leg and a sort of flexible splint for his left arm. They are uncomfortable for him especially when it's hot, and sometimes he takes them off (and it takes a while to track down where he has put them!).   Plus, he has eczema and his skin condition is often aggravated by the materials.

So I was wondering:

Are there any other moms with brace-fitted children out there? Have you found any tips for making the experience pleasant for them, and for encouraging them to keep the things on?   Have you any tips to motivate ME in spite of these difficulties? such as success stories from wearing orthotics?

Also, has anyone had kids who have been given Botox injections for hypertonia?   Aidan is going to be evaluated soon for injections.   It means more frequent PT visits which are an expense, and a considerable time commitment to step up therapy while the Botox is having effect.   The advantages are that he might be able to somewhat break the lopsided walking pattern he is in; he could learn to move more efficiently, and it might help a bit with his motor praxis difficulties.   Any thoughts or experience with this?

Hi Willa:

I have two girls wearing braces 21 hours a day for their scoliosis. They do okay in the cold weather, but the warm weather months are killers. Since they are 15 and 13 they keep track of the hours the brace is worn, but I have told them they can be a bit lenient with themselves in the summer. Both of them wear "body socks", essentially like a long t-shirt under the brace and use a lot of baby powder. My 15-yr old does have a problem with eczema too in certain spots. We have had to get a prescription cream for that. The orthotist was also able to apply special foam pads on the places where the brace was causing the eczema to appear. All in all their is no one solution.

Good luck!
