Hi!
With my youngest autie, we have an issue we did not with either his older sibs or his uncle. Namely, we have covered the most basic content in things like science, religion, etc. The problem is that most of the material I can find at the next level up requires reasonably good reading skills which he doesn't have or reasonably good auditory comprehension which he also doesn't have.
My biggest concern is religion. I want to continue his religion studies past his confirmation, but I am somewhat at a loss. Books like books of Bible stories or stories of saints are a stretch for him; he can't be expected to retain a great deal of material from them although I do use them. Picture books work well (Thank you, Catholic Mosaic and Christmas Mosaic), but I don't think there is a picture book curriculum for what he needs.

Have you see An Illustrated Catechism by Innos Biffi?

What material do you think you'd like to cover? If stories are difficult for him, does he do better with a question-answer format? Would something like The Picture Bible help him understand the stories? It does not include the Deuterocanonical books (it is published by a Protestant publisher), but it does cover the stories common to both Protestants and Catholics. It is an engaging comic book format and sticks pretty close to the actual Bible text.
Maybe if I knew what you are trying to cover and how he learns best, I could think of other resources.

Monica,
Dvds generally work better with him as long as they are not mostly lecturing to him which rules out most of the appropriate dvds for teens. I do have some, but not a year's worth. I hope to find another one or two at IHM, but I'll need more than that for 10th grade Religion.

He is terrible with a question-answer format. (He has severe language and processing deficits.) He can follow stories if there are enough pictures. We just finished a Bible story book which he got something from, but his grasp is limited. Perhaps The Picture Bible might be something he can handle.
Part of the problem is that we have done the most basic level and I think he understands it, but he is a high school student now. This presents me with a couple of issues: 1) I have to actually keep track of the time he spends and he must do at least a small chunk of Religion each day 2) I really do want to have him doing Religion until he graduates, but so much of the material for him is either too simple (he is not a five year old) or beyond his ability to process. My preferred material for him would be a combined dvd program with great animation/picture book or manga format/hands on or art component.
I am hoping that I have overlooked something awesome.

What about Father Robert Barron's DVDs ("Catholicism")? Perhaps your church has a set you could borrow, and sometimes you can watch/record episodes on EWTN.
Also, there was, at least once upon a time, a comic book about the life of Pope Saint John Paul II. Could something like that work?

Nancy,
His ability to "process spoken paragraphs" is in the .1 (point 1 in case you don't notice the decimal) percentile. So, Catholicism would probably not be a good match.
I do have that Pope St. John Paul comic book somewhere.....

HAve you seen the old series of comics Treasure Chest of Fun and Fact? There is also a recent release of a book containing its original story of the life of John XXIII.
There are other comics of saints lives, too, published by Magnificat and Pauline Books and Media, if the graphic novel approach could work as a more grown up alternative to the "picture book."

Angelus Press sells four comic books (Life of Our Lord, Our Lady, the Sacraments, and the traditional Mass). These are reprints from the 1950's.

We got a series on the life of St. Paul that were manga. Not a favorite of mine (I am not fond of manga art), but maybe just the thing for your son:

I am dropping in here a bit late but also have concerns as to what would be appropriate for my dd 14. She isn't yet confirmed. I did order the program from Dynamic Catholic and will see how it goes for her (will preview it first myself).She is very visual, loves DVDs, etc.
My church said I could do a program separate from theirs to prepare her for Confirmation but I really think she needs a complete review of the basics leading up to that. She just doesn't fit into the whole "youth group" scene.
Deborah, has your son already been confirmed? This is difficult trying to figure things out for a teen who doesn't fit the typical mold!

Lindsay,
Those old comic books are worth a look. I don't think most teen programs would be a good fit for him.
I guess one of the things I was thinking about was what topics should I cover with him. No high school or even middle school curriculum will work with him. What does he really need now? Most of the materials that might work with him would work as part of a unit rather than as a whole curriculum.

Yes, my son was recently confirmed. If you are curious what i used to prepare him, read on. I used some unit studies from Emmanuel Books on the sacraments and Confirmation, material from Ad Altare Dei, youtube videos showing confirmation so he would have some idea of what to expect (chrism and an unprepared autie are not a good combination), art projects from Illuminated Ink, and two catechisms. One was specifically for ASD children and was too simple. The other was for upper elementary and was really too hard. We went over the the second one twice anyway, hoping that enough would sink in.
We also did Bible stories (Memoria Press with Mom adding in Catholic bits) and stories of saints as well as books from Catholic Mosaic and Christmas Mosaic.
Now I have to figure out what topics I want to cover in addition to reading stories of saints to him.
