I just thought I'd share that at "The One Stop" at Target (everything's $1) there was a ton of bug stuff this morning--puzzles, pens, bouncy balls with a suspended buggy inside, rubber/plastic bugs, big bug stickers (really yukky), velvet bug coloring posters and probably more that I can't remember. They also had a lot of cute gardening things and some adorable children's ladybug gardening gloves. Merchandise may vary by location, I'd guess, but it's worth a look!

Hi Ladies,

I just wanted to let you know that the rainforest lapbk is now uploaded right after the plans if that is any help. If anyone wants to try it and needs clarification on the folds just let me know.

Call me dumber, Leonie, because I can't figure out exactly what you are asking LOL! If you are trying to track down the plans etc they are under rabbit trails and then rain forest plans.

I was interrupted in my typing by a child with a file folder game question and accidentally hit post! I meant to ask how to access!

Kim is up to her eyeballs in projects already begun and I have to work on a First Communion book before May 1st, finish Pope's notebooks, and assemble rainforest lapbooks....Eric Carle has been moved to the back burner. I am going to try and convert the Beatrix Potter plans to the new, lapbook friendly format to buy myself some time before the major planning of Eric Carle. Stay tuned. It's always an adventure

I've been trying to figure out this lapbooking thing for awhile now, and I finally got DZ's Big Book of Books, which is very interesting, but didn't really help me with knowing what kind of content these are for. I'm looking for some ideas on how to use lapbooks for a 12 yo who got a little burned out last year. This year we'll be doing the Middle Ages for history, what could I pull from that for a lapbook?
Also, I thought some places had talked about using file folders, but DZ's book doesn't, just paper of different sizes.
Elizabeth, you mentioned once about making the folds as a gift to a mom with a new baby, do you mean you made up minibooks that were ready to fill in? Were these for particular lessons or what? Sorry, I'm just not getting this! I've seen the Gingerbread baby example here but how do you use them for older kids?

Karen,
I use posterboard to make the book.I don't like to attach extensions. My oldest always has alot of material, and this way works better for us. The Lapbook group has a sheet called divide the data and it is helpful. It tells you which TYPE of minibook or fold would hold that amount of info.EX: You have X amount of facts try X or X type of book.[ OK, it is much better than I'm explaining it ]
My younger children usually put their word puzzles and copywork into little booklets. The older one writes a lot of reports/summaries [based on the different topics within our study], writes the vocabulary words in a flip book [or uses the matchbook ] then will add some illustrations, recipes etc into a variety of books/folds.
After he reads/researches info. he writes his findings directly into the minbook, rather than filling in a worksheet. This is the biggest difference between how my children complete lapbooks. The oldest retains the material he puts into the lapbook, because he is constantly rereading it as he works on it.
Everyone has their own way of creating a lapbook. There is no right or wrong way. I'm just sharing what works for us.
I hope this has helped in some way. I just put the four children to bed and my mind is half asleep!

Donna, the lapbook pictures are in the individual threads that pertain to certain lapbooks.

You can see a rainforest lapbook in the Rain Forest Plans thread.

A China lapbook in the Great end to our 2 wks of Ping thread

And a Gingerbread Baby lapbook in the Jan Brett Christmas Plans thread

Karen,
You can use lapbooks for any topic you're studying, and for any age student. I am an extremely visual person, and I didn't really understand lapbooks until I saw the Dinah Zike videos. But I also saw Tammy Dubay do a presentation at our homeschool convention which was excellent. She now has a video as well that you can buy from Tobin's Lab She showed us some amazing lapbooks her son did when he was older!
We use lapbooking for more single type topics, and notebooking more for ongoing material we'll keep adding to, but in the notebooks, we also use lots of minit books (small type books you see in Dinah's book).
I copied and pasted my DIVIDE the DATA sheet below that I hand out when I do lapbooking workshops. It gives you an idea of the types of things you can put into a lapbook, and how you'd choose the little books that you may include. Hope it helps some anyway.
Blessings,
Tracy

DIVIDE THE DATA

TWOS

Compare/Contrast
Cause/Effect
Before/After
Opposites (ex. sink & float, democrats/republicans
vertebrates/invertebrates, magnetic/non-magnetic,
fiction/non-fiction)

THREES

Head, thorax, abdomen
Three pigs
Three regions of life on Earth (water, land, air)
Morning, noon, night
Igneous, Metamorphic, Sedimentary
Nina, Pinta, Santa Maria

FOURS

Four seasons
Four turning points of WW II
Ancient Civilizations – Greek, Mesopotamian, Roman, Egyptian
Character, Plot, Setting, Conflict/Resolution
Who? What? When? Where?
What? Where? When? How?
Four Hemispheres

Thanks Tracy, that list looks very useful to keep at hand. I guess I need to get one of those videos b/c I just don't get all the little details. I've never seen a lapbook in person, and most of the samples I've seen posted are more for younger kids, especially with picture books. I'd like to do something with my older son (12) this year; if I can't figure out the lapbook thing I may just do scrapbook type books. However, I tend to get overwhelmed with all the cutesie little things you can put in scrapbooks, and pages take me forever to complete. Ds is the same way. If there's an embellishment or a sticker, etc. he's going to use it. I can see this adding lots of time to our days!

Karen,
I'm going to attempt giving you some lapbooking websites that may help you out. Our Cay Gibson has a great page for lapbooking here:
Cay's lapbooking page

This site looks like it has a few examples of some lapbooks made by older children that may help a lot:
older kid's lapbooks

Tobin's lab has some great downloads that are very helpful for free. Tammy's lapbook information sheet (two pages to download) can be found here:Tammy Dubay's lapbook Info Sheet

I know Tammy's video would have examples of her older child's lapbooks too.

I hope this helps some!

Thanks, I have been looking at many different sites over the last week and getting a better idea. I guess we just need to jump in and try some, and then maybe it will all make sense.

Karen,
Tobin's Lab has an instructional DVD on lapbooking. It is really good to get you started. Even though we've done some lapbooking, this DVD has really helped me put it all together...literally and figuratively .

Just to throw in my own 2 cents....I learned so much from Cay's lapbooking page. I am curious to see how many and what topics we lapbook this new year.
