Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I posted a prayer request for our friend whose husband passed away last week. She is discovering today that their health insurance expires tomorrow unless they can pay a very large monthly premium. She is wondering if there exists health insurance agents. Does anyone have experience with this or advice for someone recently widowed with children?

Thank you!

She should contact a local private insurance company. They work with several different companies and should be able to compare all the companies to find the best deal. Maybe there is a local charity that could help her pay that monthly premium this month to give her another month to find affordable insurance. We have one locally that is Catholic based. Praying!

Any chance her husband was a veteran? USAA's Survivorship Department has been so helpful to us.

Maybe the Knights of Columbus can help? I know health insurance isn't their area, but they may have resources that could help.

We use an insurance agent to purchase health insurance. My son did the same, rather than try to find it through the exchange in our state.

We are in the process of working with our agent to find a new plan, since our current one goes up an extra $15,000 beginning Dec. 1.

I will pray for this lady! If there is any way that she can pay it, today, just to make sure they don't go without, I would do that, and then she can always cancel when she finds a different plan. At least you used to be able to do that. I am not sure what the new rules are- so highly recommend an insurance agent!

In Christ,

Thank you so much. The pastor at one of the churches he worked for paid the premium for the month of November so she has some time. The frustrating thing is that he worked for various parishes in our diocese and I am shocked that there is not a better system in place to care for widows, especially widows with young children.

I appreciate all of your advice and will forward your notes to her.

Continuing to pray for her and the children as they adjust to life without their loved one.

Why don't all those parishes take up a collection to get her through a year? Parishes donate money to various projects and even people they don't know but when it comes to taking care of their own, charity is often lacking.
