Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

May I ask your recommendations for books to give as gifts this Christmas? I am looking specifically for books to encourage married couples in their vocation. The couples I have in mind identify themselves as Catholic, but do not attend Mass regularly or follow the teachings of the Church on many things. They are also family.

I am looking for something that would help them to understand the teachings of the Church on marriage but not be too "preachy"--solid truth but easy to swallow, if you know what I mean. If it comes in an audiobook format as well, that would be great as one couple is more likely to listen than read.

I would also welcome book recommendations for a brother who has left the Church that might give him cause to consider returning. I thought perhaps Evert's "Saint John Paul the Great." It isn't specifically a "come home" book, but might get him thinking about the Church, and that is what I am hoping for as I suspect he will read whatever I give him, but be less likely to tune out something that isn't about reconversion. I haven't read it (it is on my wishlist), could anyone who has read it tell me if it would be the kind of book I think it is?

Thank you!

I have found that to be true. My mother called to talk to me about faith and returning to the Church after I sent her my book of poems. Henri Nouwen's books that I have given as gifts have also had a similar effect. He has many that are thought-provoking and heart provoking without being preachy.

Blessings,
