I have 2 third graders this year. For second grade both kids had their own workbooks, but I just am not able to afford that right this year....so the question is....Can I, for example, buy Seton's 4th grade religion workbook and copy it so both kids can use it. I would also ask about Saxon 3 math and Spelling Workout and CHC Language arts.
We don't have these books yet, but will have to buy them here and there when the money is available, I'm sure we will still be buying books in the fall.
We are doing some schoolwork this summer, but we are relying on the library to provide us with living books
as we study the continents and focus on health science.

It totally depends on the individual company and workbook. There are some like Easy Grammar that if you get the teacher's book have all the student pages too and you have copyright permission to copy for your family. Other's don't.
But also look at the real cost of copying the book.. it can be cheaper to buy a second workbook than copy all the pages depending on your costs.

The grammar books I have bought from Critical Thinking Press allow copying
(Editor in Chief, Language Mechanic).
I am pretty sure CHC does not allow it.

CHC, Seton, and Saxon are copyrighted, so you cannot legally copy them.
When I've been in the same boat, I make them share the book and put their answers on lined paper rather than writing in the book. It is a difficult skill for younger children, so you need to evaluate whether that is putting too much strain on them.

Thanks for the info. I will probably try having them share and if that doesn't work buy another book when the money is available.

Doesn't copyrighting have to do with selling the pages? I always thought that personal use was exempted...

It's particular to the publisher/author/owner there's no blanket exemption for personal use. Some give that permission, other's don't. Some copy rights even prohibit the resale of the item (Rosetta Stone for instance)

I don't know if something like this would fit in your budget any better, Joann, but what about a set of Dry Erase Pockets? Each child could have their own color, and you would just drop the worksheet into the pocket, they do their work, and then the worksheet goes into the other child's pocket.
You could also use a simple page protector sheet if you had one of those at home already, but they're not as rigid around the edges and it makes writing on them a little bit trickier. But you could definitely brainstorm that one, too...maybe put it on a clipboard to hold the top, and a couple of pieces of washi tape on the corners to hold the sheet protector in place?
You would just need to make sure you get extra fine dry erase markers for writing on them. And use alcohol swabs to clean them after each use and they'll stay crystal clear!

Copyright is not only for selling the book, it is also for copying for use among multiple children. The books sold is the livelihood for those who publish, if people buy only one book and copy it for all their children, how will the homeschool publishers stay in business? I totally know how hard it is to purchase books for all the kids, we frequently run in deficits being in the start-up years of our businesses. I think most of us struggle to have the money to buy school books, as we have many children, and single income, most times. The homeschool publishers know this, but it IS their livelihood, and it costs a lot to publish. I find if I can remember this, and see it as helping them keep publishing these great books, then it makes it easier to squeeze out the money to buy multiple books, and keep supporting them.
I find it especially hard when there's more than one child using the same book same year, like you have this year, JoAnn. I'm finding the adding of twins into the homeschool a big addition to the homeschool budget. They double what we had before, as it went from 2 to 4!

 Joann, I totally know where you're at with this, as we have to buy the books here and there when we can afford to *squeeze* them in. It's hard, it would be so nice to just purchase the books all at once and have them in hand! But, God is good, and He provides... Many hugs, dear friend. Always, love to see you here. Our income was very low for quite a few years -- we didn't really have any money to buy homeschool resources. With younger kids you can do a lot orally (together, if you have more than one kid on the same grade level) and for things like math, there are lots of worksheets on the internet to print out to reinforce skills.
Companies like currclick sell digital (PDF) versions that allow you to copy as much as you need for your own family use. For example, I've bought Math Mammoth resources on there -- and lapbook and notebooking pages.
THere is more information about copyrights and fair use here -- it seems rather on the hard side. I'm not sure what I think of the issues raised but it does seem pretty clear about what the law allows and doesn't allow.
I wish there were more Catholic companies that offered family-use workbook-type resources -- CHC used to when they first started.
Cascia Language Arts has some downloadables for family use. Lighted Lanterns looks charming for the younger age levels.

Praying for your family. I know from experience it is possible to give your kids a good education on a shoestring, though sometimes challenging and requiring resourcefulness and the help of the angels and saints.

Have you seen Daily Grammar Blog?
You can start at the very beginning... lesson one, and I think third graders could easily do this program.
CHC has a bargin basement. The contents change almost daily, but sooner or later you can find just about any of their books in their for a nice discount.

re: reusing consumables
Reusing workbooks (without copying) should be OK.
I came across a page from a professional publication Copyright Catechism which contains articles compiled from the Library Media Connection. periodical which states that reusing workbooks by having children write the answers elsewhere is permissable (if impractical for a classroom).
