Anybody have any really good titles to share? For some reason my personal reading basket is about empty, and I've not felt inspired to fill it with any particular books. I'm looking for inspiration! It seems I spend so much time looking for books for my kids, I all of a sudden find myself with nothing worthwhile to read, or at least nothing that I want to read. I am considering this book
which I first saw while visiting Cay's blog. I don't know that much about it though. What did you think of it Cay?
Any other ideas? I'm looking mostly for non-fiction.

I'm usually a non-fiction gal, myself, but lately I've been reading some lighter fiction as I near the end of this pregnancy. My main picks have been from the Brother Cadfael mysteries, written by Ellis Peters. The stories are set in Englang in the Middle Ages with the main character being a knight-turned-Benedictine,
Currently, though, I'm reading Anne of Green Gables and thoroghly enjoying it. It's a good light-hearted read.
Sorry, I wasn't much help there.

Well, I loved Animal, Vegetable, Miracle. Bill got a book report every night. I found it very inspiring and exciting (preachy in spots so I breezed over that). It inspired personal interests as well as a spring unit study on growing food. The fact that I don't understand food seasons (I'm from California) and don't garden and have only been to a farmer's market one time probably helped since EVERYTHING in the book was new to me. I even got a cheesemaking kit for Christmas!
My other books right now are Omnivore's Dilemma (similar topic, but the last chapter was a snoozer), Gary Kasparov's book about how chess in applicable to life, a pregnancy nutrition book, the Catholic Sourcebook (but not in an organized way), and the Busy Person's Guide to Preserving Food (I'm too busy for even this apparently).
I'd give links, but I'm inept on the laptop, sorry!

Non fiction here too... every January and August I seem to pull out Fly Lady's Sink Reflections.

I'm usually a non-fiction reader as well. For Christmas I got:
Animal, Vegetable, Miracle
Stephen Colbert's I am America (though, this might be more like fiction, LOL!)
Some sewing books (Sew What: Skirts, and Sew U)
Born Standing Up(Steve Martin autobio)
and
a subscription to Mother Earth News.
The only fiction I got was the first book in the Master and Commander series by Patrick O'Brien, which I have been wanting to read for ages.
I'll get started on these as soon as I finish my current read, Montessori in the Classroom.

Flylady's Sink Reflections and Montessori in the Classroom are two that I have thought of getting in the past.
Maryan, do you find Sink Reflections helpful? I used to be on the Flylady email list but all the emails drove me crazy.
Theresa, does Montessori in the Classroom relate well to the homeschool setting?
I think my theme this new year is a desire for peace and order in my home!
I'm also trying to decide on a book about the Liturgical Year, but there are several that I have on a wishlist from Amazon and I can't decide.

Becky, so far Montessori in the Classroom has been very inspiring. And eye-opening.
I'm only about a quarter through it so I can't tell you a whole lot about it, but several ladies here (Meredith, for sure)have read it and loved it.We have a whole thread on that book somewhere. I assume in the Early childhood board, now that there isn't a specific Montessori board?
Oh, and I'll be glad to pass my copy on to you when I am done. Just PM me if you want it.

I finished Shadowplay, about Catholic Shakespeare, and I am reading Bill Bryson's Shakespeare book. The former is inspirational, the latter is typical Bryson. I also just finished Bryson's audio program Mother Tongue.

I'm reading the nice light A Miracle For St. Cecilia's by Katherine Valentine. I first heard about it here. It is perfect to pick up during spare minutes during the day.

I'm reading Happy Are You Poor: The Simple Life and Spiritual Freedom by Fr. Thomas Dubay and A Woman in Charge (about Hillary Clinton) by Carl Bernstein. The former was a Christmas gift I requested and the latter is a library book. Oh, I also just started McCain: The Myth of a Maverick by Matt Welch which I also checked out of the library.

This year I have decided I MUST find time to read for me. I never was introduced to the classics in public school (in 8th grade English we actually HAD to watch Pee Wee Herman's Big Adventure and write about it   ) so I am starting off with Dickens. I read "A Tale of Two Cities" and presently I'm reading "David Copperfield" and loving it.

I have just finished reading The Lightning Thief for my 12yo's Book Group this Thursday. It's my turn to lead the kids in discussion. The book was very good, btw! Kind of like a Harry Potter but with Greek gods. (We're starting ancient Greeks this month so it was a timely read. )
Next I'd like to read Mansfield Park. It is one of my new year goals to read the Austen books I have yet to read ...
My husband got the Colbert book (audio version) for Christmas as well as A Walk in the Woods. I may have to borrow them at some point!

I've justed started re-reading A Memory for Wonders This is a definite "can't put down" book about a girl's realization of the existence of God, despite her parent's Communist agenda to not have her exposed to ANY form of religion at all and then by God's grace, ended up becoming a Poor Clare! I read it about 10 years ago and its still as good it was the first time I read it! Very refreshing

I've just finished 'Come Rack! Come Rope!' by R H Benson. Amazon synopsis says 'Among the best-known of Benson's works, "Come Rack! Come Rope!" tells of the suffering of Catholics under Elizabeth I of England, as shown through the eyes of one Catholic family. Tragedy, divine love, and the doctrine of vocation play important roles in this early novel of faith and spiritual redemption.'

I loved Animal, Vegetable, Miracle, too! Of course, it helped that Steven Hopp was one of my college professors and dh's faculty advisor. That was back in the mid- to late 80's, though, and Dr. Hopp wasn't married to Barbara Kingsolver at the time. (But he was cool even before he was married to a famous author. ) Her descriptions of the area and the locals are perfect - dh's family on both sides is from there, so I while I am still an "outsider", I have 20-some years' worth of observation under my belt.

Hit post before I meant to. If local food issues interest you, I suggest Joel Salatin's Everything I Want to Do is Illegal. I'm in the middle of it now, and it is eye-opening. 
I'm about to start Shadowplay, and I'm almost through Danielle Bean's Mom to Mom. That is a great New Year's book - funny and inspirational, but not guilt-inducing.

TOTALLY non-fiction, but food for thought-
I just finished de Toquiville's "Memoir on Pauperism" (why there is an underclass, and probably always will be... hmm... didn't some famous guy say "the poor you will always have with you...?" But, I digress...)
Also, got "Crunchy Cons" by Dreher for Christmas (I suspect many have already read it and find him sympathetic to the homeschooling, one-income, focus-on-the-essential-things, non-materialism of many of us.)
REALLY enjoyed Michael Medved's "Right Turns." GREAT autobiography. What a lot of intersections he's had with the cultural elite!
