Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I can't seem to get into a good habit for requesting, picking up and returning library books. We have not done several subjects in the past few weeks because I have not been to the library to check out books. I am not doing a total CM approach, only for certain subjects since I felt like I needed more structure this first year of homeschooling. Now that I'm feeling frustrated over getting books for only a few subjects, I'm wondering how I will ever be able to do this for all the subjects.

How do you organize this part of your learning? Do you purchase main books and do light supplementaion from the library? Do you go to the library each week?

I'm lucky enough to have a great online library catalog, both at my local library and the ILL version. When I come across a book I want to look at, I request it immediately. Once I've seen it, I know if it will be a good fit for our learning. Then I make a decision about buying. If I'm not going to buy it, I keep track on my planning calendar of what books I need when, and order them accordingly from the library. Our library is about 15 miles away, but one of us is usually in town weekly to pick them up.

Similar to Paula, I don't browse in the library. The kids get too crazy. I immediately reserve books to preview, although my selection isn't as vast as Paula.

I have a good many books at home, but also use the library. I try to go once a week, even if it just means a quick drop off of due books and pick up of the reserved titles. This schedule falls down a bit with sickness, but generally it's once a week or every two weeks at minimum.

We go to the library every other week for the children to browse and choose their own books. We usually go on Wednesday, which is our "light" day...the day we go to Mass, run errands, etc.

For books for educational purposes, I always use the online request feature at my library. Sometimes this means I have to pick up books between our regular Wed. trips, so I stop on the "off" Wednesdays when we are running errands ONLY to pick up my requests. I don't let the children do any browsing then.

The online catalog and request option at my library is a life-saver. They have a great ILL program and I have been able to request many of the titles recommended in the various programs I use. Don't forget to use the audio materials, too! We listen to a lot of great books while driving to and fro, thanks to our library.

We keep library books in a separate basket. Also, our library notifies us by email a few days before our books are due. This is a great help in getting the books together and back on time. If your library does not have this service, you should keep your checkout receipts attached to your calendar with a note to collect the books a day before they are due.

In the event of a sick child or other problem getting to the library, I renew online.

Oh, I forget, I do purchase main books that I will use over a long period of time or that I want for my permanent library. So, for example, I purchased The Life of Our Lord by Marigold Hunt because we are reading it a little at a time over the course of an entire term.

Thank you for replying. I'm sorry that I didn't scroll down further and read the other library topic before posting a similar question. I get too impulsive when my mind starts swirling!

keeping track of library books

We are heavy on living books for the content subjects. I make a list of all of the books we will be needing for the following month. Then in the middle of the month, I put an order in online. We have a 3 week loan period but we can renew if needed.

We go to the library every week so the kids can browse for their 'fluff' books and I can pick up any books that are in for us.    This system works well for us.

We are blessed with an amazing library system here. I can check out books for a 30 day period and renew them twice for another 30 days each time as long as no one else has requested that particular item.

Last summer as I was planning our year I spent a few weeks ordering huge stacks at the library, looking through materials and making the book lists out by when I would need to request the materials from the library. Now I just work off of that list and I put requests in about 2 weeks before I know we'll need certain books. They'll hold them for 10 days once they arrive at our branch. We go in every week to turn books in and pick up the holds. I have an orchestra rehearsal on Thursday nights so I will sometimes go to the library on my own after rehearsal but most often I take the kids with me on Saturdays as part of our errand running.

We have a library day once a week. This year it is Fridays. Some years it has been other days. We live about 8 blocks from the library, but I can see that if I had a longer drive I might not go that often, or be as organized. I drive by my library almost every day.
