Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I have some questions related to these threads, but I didn't want to hijack any of them.

Blenders?

Favorite Smoothie Recipes

When I read about smoothie drinks, I wonder about a few things.

I'm highly sensitive to citric acid. It doesn't take much to give me heartburn, ever since I was a child. Some of these recipes with high amounts of citrus fruit just sounds simply painful to me. Anyone have similar problems and able to deal with these kind of smoothies?

I also see high amounts of carbs and natural sugars. While I know it's fruit and not simple sugars, my experience with gestational diabetes has made me more cautious about eating drinking lots of fruit juice. The endocrinologist said it's always preferred to eat the whole fruit than the juice, as juice is very high in carbohydrates.

And do you miss chewing? I love crunch and texture, and have never been a shakes or smoothies type of gal.

I also have hesitation because of the food allergies here. I could probably do yogurt and eggs in my smoothie, but besides soy milk, ds doesn't have a protein source in the smoothie (eggs, wheat, and dairy are his allergies).

So, can anyone address my personal hang ups?

LOL I love your line about "chewing"! I recently bought a strawberry smoothie, and had the one made with ice rather than yogurt, because I wanted something to munch on. Hee hee, we must be sisters!

With a VitaMix, I use just enough freshly juiced carrot, apple, or pear juice to blend the whole fruit. So, we're getting a substantial amount of whole fruit fiber. I absolutely could not drink these when pregnant, I'm sure, because I can't eat fruit when pregnant.

There are fruits and juices that aren't acidic--carrots, apples, pears, peaches, bananas, etc all go well with a yogurt base.

The addition of coconut oil helps to keep the blood sugar rise in check quite well. Flax seeds add substantial fiber to the good fiber of the whole fruit.

I like to add peanut or almond butter for added protein and I can also add whey protein, but I rarely do. About ten years ago, I had an orange juice, fruit and soy protein smoothie every day. When an ulcer presented, my doctor called that smoothie an "acid bomb." Powdered protein is very acidic and soy is a whole 'nuther can of worms.

I don't miss the crunch, probably because when I was pregnant with Stephen, I crunched so much ice that my teeth fractured and now "crunch" hurts. Fuzzy, I learned too late that often when pregnant women crave chewing ice, it can be indicative of low iron.

All that said, if you're not a shakes and smoothies person, then a VitaMix probably isn't for you. Think of all the money you'll save!

Jenn, I don't know if dairy falls in your food allergy issues, but we've been using alot of kefir in our smoothies lately. I use alot of frozen fruit, so there is some 'crunch' to the smoothies too. (I like more 'thickness' in my smoothies!)

I make a smoothie for my boys before wrestling practice using frozen bananas, honey, peanutbutter (any nut butter would work, and I have made it without) and kefir.    Their practice runs until just past supper time, and this keeps them going until they have their meal.

About the crunch, we make smoothies as a part of our meal not as a meal replacement. We do yogurt, ice, and frozen fruit for our smoothie and then have a piece or toast or a half a bagel. For me, a drink can't be the whole meal even if it is filling.

I almost wish I craved ice. I've used my will power reserves the past few weeks trying not to eat the kids' chalk.    And I'm trying to work more iron into my diet, but it doesn't seem to be helping. But that's a different thread.

Rachel, go to the doctor and get some iron pills! I was so low on iron, they could have put me in the hospital! One months worth of iron pills later, I was doing great. I cannot tell you how much ice I crunched (but no fractured teeth ...lol) or how much chip and dip I ate. I don't know much about nutrition, but found out that all of these items (including chalk) is called a pica and is directly related to low iron levels!

And be sure to combine your iron with Vitamin C--orange juice or tomatoes are high in it. You know all of this came about as a result of our move, but I am ever so thankful. I stopped crunching ice and stop eating chip and dip (which resulted in a significant weight loss).

Sorry to hijack your thread, Jenn, but my life is so different now because I feel so much better! Maybe I ought to go and make a smoothie (only I don't have a blender yet)!

What dosage did you take?

Maria, when I first started, I was taking 200 mg in the evening. After one week, I started taking 400 mg--one in the morning and one in the evening. My iron level shot up in one month. Just plain ferrous sulphate.

In Wales, the doctor prescibed a time-released ferrous sulphate of 325 mg. I seem to be holding my own since the blood test came back and I was still in range. And I can tell because of how great I feel (and that happened before the move over ... although Wales is a great place to live)!

As for the protein source you could add some soaked almonds or walnuts. Just soaked in water overnight. Maybe almond milk. I'm not real familiar with that. A nut spread on wheat free bread would give another protein source with a meal.

I use smoothies to sneak in foods like greens, just a few spinach leaves doesn't alter the taste, and I use frozen, the colder the less flavorful or when needed prune juice goes in undetected. Like someone else said we use it as the drink with a meal and only about an 8- 10 ounce smoothie. I use a 1/2 a banana to sweeten and just enough red fruit to mask the color.

HTH, Valerie

Thanks everyone. I knew there were answers and different approaches than my narrow view of seeing.
