Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

We are going the traditional route.......

Turkey, we will stuff it with lemons, apples and fresh herbs
Cranberry Sausage Stuffing, I think this is a recipe I got from Dawns' blog last year
Fresh Cranberry Sauce
Golden Delicious Applesauce
Mashed Potatoes
Green Beans with Garlic, a Barefoot Contessa recipe we adapt a bit
Salad, hopefully, when the table starts to get really full we usually bag the salad
Key Lime Pie
Apple Pie, we use the recipe from How to See the World...
Sparkling Cider, this year I discovered Trader Joe's Pomegranate Sparkling Cider (Thanks Chari for the recommendation )

I have not even started my shopping yet ! Looks like I am going to be battling the crowds this weekend....good thing I have a lot of chamomile tea at home

Whatever my mil is making!!

Actually, yesterday I e-mailed the fam to make sure that everyone coming already had chicken pox (and they did -- yay!!) I was starting to live in fear that I would have to figure out what to do with giblets!!

It's our first Thanksgiving in VA -- my very first Thanksgiving in 37 years that I'm not with my mother -- so I'd better volunteer to make green bean casserole. Or this pregnant lady would cry if it was missing!!

So yep... in 37 years I've never had to make a Thanksgiving turkey.

I am hosting for 25.

We are going traditional too

Turkey cooked with lemon, apples, onions, sage, thyme and rosemary

Mashed potatoes

Cajun veggie side dish (not so traditional)

cranberry stuffing

homemade bread rolls (or Great Harvest if I am struggling)

Big veggie stirfry (not so traditional)

regular jellied cranberry sauce

cranberry mango relish (still looking for my recipe)

apple pie

cranberry bread

My kids are making a punch from the My Very First Thanksgiving book.

The kids have also requested hors d'oeuvres for the football afterwards - even if they have had a huge dinner they will be hungry 2 hours later. I am thinking of dips and wings.

We are also going the traditional route, but I hope to add to the menu to make it our own. Everything on it is the same thing my mom served when I was living at home.

~Turkey
~mashed potatoes
~cranberry sauce
~green beans (sauteed in butter and a bit of lemon rind)
~another veggie (probably a mixed one)
~rolls (I'd love to find a homemade recipe...like Red Lobster's cheese bread)
~green salad
~candied yams topped w/ marshmallows
~rice artichoke salad
~apple and pumpkin pies
~a "cloud" dessert (cool whip and jell-o whipped together)

~new this year -- baked mac n cheese and another type of pie

I also haven't gone shopping yet, but that isn't unusual for me.....it's still early.

Lobster
artichokes
pumpkin
nuts
apples
bread (homemade)
clam chowder

and because I am me 24 different types of pies! Yep, my mom always did this so I do too!   It helps that we will be spending it with a group of religious men, who I am certain will enjoy the spread.

In case you are thinking we are insane, friends will be adding more traditional foods

Is that just one lobster or 24 or something in between? I'm trying to imagine the $ plus how to cook them!      I'd eat at your house in an instant!

We're visiting Bill's family this year so I'm curious to see what will be on the menu. It'll be better than the dining facility where we've spent a few Thanksgivings, that's for sure. I'm also sure that   Gwen's Whole Grain Rolls will not be on the menu. We only have them on Thanksgiving and sometimes Christmas.

Yesterday, my mom gave me a new recipe for Walnut Mushroom Stuffing she'd like to try this year. It calls for walnut bread I've never seen walnut bread, but then again, I've never looked.

Were you able to get your shopping done, Mary Chris?

For the very first time in almost thirteen years of marriage we are staying home and having a traditional Thanksgiving meal with just dh,the kids, and me. Dh's mom is in Virginia visiting someone. We usually go to her house. I am so looking forward to a holiday at home with the family. I hate all of the traveling. It's kinda selfish, but that is the thing I am most thankful for, even if I have to cook a whole lot of things I have never made before!!LOL!!

My mom is having a get together on Saturday. We may go for a few hours, but she is less than a mile from us. We could walk there. We won't stay lohg. Dh doesn't deal with the crowds well(ironic that we are expecting our seventh), and one of my nephews really like to beat up one of my sons whenever we are at a family gathering. UGH!!

Okay that was OT and TMI...    We are having:

A turkey
mashed potatoes
candied yams with marshmallows
stuffing(somehow I will figure out how to make this!!!)
green bean casserole
cranberry sauce
corn relish(if I can find the recipe--dh loves this)
dinner rolls
pumpkin pie
apple pie
cherry pie
relish tray

Am I forgeting anything????????

Dh will smoke the turkey. He does that every year for my mom even if we aren't at her house, so he will do it for us this year. We have a ham, too, but I think we will save it for Christmas.

Jen - you all sound as pie-crazy as our family! Starting with dessert (not in real life), we'll have pumpkin, apple, and pecan pies. Dd 20 is a champion at piecrust, so she'll do the pies.

Otherwise, we'll have

Roast Turkey, with gravy as well as Tofurkey
(2 of my dc are vegetarians)
           Stuffing
           Mashed potatoes
           Baked yams and apples
           Cranberry
           Brocolli
Glazed parsnips, carrots, and little white
                onions
Sauerkraut with kielbasa (this is not so
uncommon in Maryland, and it really
                wouldn't taste like Thanksgiving
                without it)

Also, we'll add to the dessert whipped cream and/or ice cream.

           Whoa!!

Hoping everyone has a fantastic Thanksgiving.

Peace,
Nancy

We always have that on New Year's Day.

Anyway, for our Thanksgiving, I may be having tea, and toast, and maybe rice ...Mommy doesn't feel good....

But in reality, here is the menu:

Turkey Breast
Stuffing with Apples & Cranberries
Pumpkin Quinoa
Sweet Potato & Apple Bake
Green Bean Casserole
Cranberry/orange sauce from TJ's

Pumpkin Pie
Apple Pie
Some Jello concoction that I haven't decided yet....it will probably have marshmallows....

Heee... for the first time in years.... other people's food! Every year I plan Thanksgiving in October, go through days (sometimes even a couple of weeks) of preparation and still slave away on Thanksgiving Day.

This year, we are going to our relatives' party six hours away. I can't tell you how much I'm anticipating not cooking!!!

Your menus all sound delectable, though!!! I hope some of my relatives prepare similar items -- I want that sauerkraut and kielbasa, Nancy! I'm pretty sure I won't be seeing that at their table!

I am off the hook for bringing anything to my husband's parents on Thurs. because of my ankle injury. However, I can briefly sit at the table and help my kids use the apple slicer, so I will be directing and my husband will be producing and bringing this Apple Crunch Pie that I make every year.

I have a couple of questions from this thread.

Nancy - Is tofurky good?

Laura - How is pumpkin quinoa prepared?

Thanks!

Blessings,
kristina

Actually, Kristina, tofurkey does nothing for me at all! I generally am okay with various tofu meat substitutes, but that one just falls flat; maybe because the *real* turkey is right there for direct comparison? Somehow, even though there is tons to eat at Thanksgiving even if someone skipped the turkey, my daughters feel like something's missing if they don't have at least *so-called* turkey. So I get it for them.

Peace,
Nancy

Oh, how I wish I could pop back on here and amaze you all with my culinary finesse!

Alas - pumpkin quinoa is prepared by going to the Prepared Foods Counter in my local WholeFoods and saying, "Can I have a small container of the Pumpkin Quinoa?"

I can tell you, it has pumpkin, and cranberries, and sage, and butternut squash, it is very good, hot or cold. But we are big quinoa fans anyway. I can cook plain ol' quinoa

Yes, Thanksgiving is already a week past, but we just celebrated Sunday so I thought about this thread.

(Plus, my mom asked for a few recipes and I'm about to type them up.    )

New recipes I tried with great success and raves....
~Green salad with a Red Wine Vinaigrette
~Green beans w/ Glazed Shallots in Lemon-Dill Butter
~Cranberry-Pear Chutney (house smelled GREAT!)
~Ultimate Creamed Corn
~Parmesan-Butternut Squash Gratin

New Desserts
~Eggnog Pots de Creme
~Pumpkin Caramel Cheesecake

Drink (served in a punch bowl)
~Cranberry-Apple Spritzer

Now, the time consuming part, to type out a few for my mom.....and my Home Management Notebook .

We were on our own this year and couldn't afford a good turkey for just us (our local supplier had "small" ones that were only 30 lbs . . .) so we got a rabbit. It was delicious--tasted just like turkey, actually.

The next morning my 3yo ds had therapy and his PT asked him what he'd eaten for Thanksgiving dinner. He was in a silly mood and named a bunch of silly animals before shouting, "We ate a bunny!" She was horrified when we confirmed this fact. We've been laughing about it ever since.

Absolutely!

We love eggnog.

This recipe calls for 8 hours in the refrig to cool off(perfect for cooking the day before Thanksgiving), but I enjoyed it while it hot, too.

Eggnog Pots de Creme
1 1/2 cups eggnog
1/2 cup half-and-half
3 egg yolks
2 tsp. cornstarch
1/2 tsp. rum extract
Ground nutmeg

1. In saucepan, heat eggnog and half-and-half over medium-low heat, stirring occasionally, until hot.
2. In medium bowl, beat egg yolks, cornstarch and rum extract with wire whisk. Stir a small amount of the hot eggnog mixture into egg mixture, then gradually stir egg mixture back into eggnog mixture in saucepan. Continue cooking over medium-low heat, stirring constantly, until mixture just begins to boil and thicken. Immediately remove from heat.
3. Pour into 4 (4.5-ounce) serving dishes. Sprinkle with nutmeg. Refrigerate at least 8 hours until well chilled and set.

This dessert can be made up to 24 hours ahead. Just cover each dish with plastic wrap and refrigerate.

Enjoy!
