Help!
I am knitting the Mabel Dress from Simple Knits for Cherished Babies and nearly at the end. I am doing up the sleeves. The pattern calls for 5 rows of ribbing and then on the increase rows it says simply "rib 3 stitches, up 1 stitch, rib 5 stitches, etc..."
What does "up 1 stitch" mean please?

Kathleen,
First, take a deep breath!
OK, up 1 stitch means to increase in the bar of yarn between the sts to make 1. I usually lift the bar with the needle, give it a twist and knit the st so that there is no hole.
Looks like a lovely dress! Please let us know how it turns out!

Mary....you are a genius and a saint! I am making the baby cardigan in the latest Vogue knitting (I never make anything out of there but I was really drawn to their very classical cardigan, cute and so sweet)....and I had to make increases for the sleeves..and right after I read your post, I noted that these little increases made holes in my sleeves.....and I read your little twisty twist advise, and walaaa!! IT WORKS!!!
BTW....I found this yarn called Bunny Hop....LOVE IT!! Using it instead of Debbie Bliss's cashmerino. Bunny Hop has part acrylic, nylon and angora...so soft and great to knit!!

yep, sometimes you WANT those holes (you can always call them a "design element" but sometimes they're rather pesky!

who makes Bunny Hop? I love Bliss' yarns but I just don't want to make baby sweaters in that expensive of a yarn ... I prefer something soft but definitely mashine washable -- don't want to make it harder for the mom to wash or the baby would NEVER wear it!

Crystal Palace makes Bunny Hop...I can't remember how much it was a skein, I had a gift certificate, and can't remember how much was what...it wasn't as cheap as Encore, but it is delightful!!! It says you can handwash or machine wash gentle cycle and dry flat.....
Thanks again, my sleeve is looking good! I'll try to send you a picture when it is done and girly is wearing it!!

To avoid the hole when you "make 1", you can also lift the bar onto your left-hand needle, then knit into the back of it. You get the same result as twisting, but without the need to twist

Thanks for all the help! The Mabel dress is finally finished. She was 6 mos. old this week. It's more like a swing top than a dress ......and the sleeves are a little wonky, but the model is cute enough to forgive all of my knitting shortcomings!
