Has anyone heard of this or done this...tried to take 10,000 steps a day, that is? I first heard this idea mentioned on a TTapp DVD. Then I looked for a pedometer (which I now have) and saw this book, 10,000 Steps a Day to Your Optimum Weight. Thinking, what can a book possibly tell me about taking 10,000 steps, I just put on the pedometer and started counting. Well, I have to admit, when I hit 10,000 steps a day I feel much better than when I don't. I'm tempted to get the book to see if there are any tricks to sneaking in steps - I can only step so much while folding clothes .

Anyone?

Love,

I've not seen the book before, but I am a firm believer in the power of a pedometer. I've lost over 20 pounds this Lent (179 down to 158 today--the lowest I've been in 3 years!) All I've done is try to make better eating choices and make sure I get 10,000 steps at least each day. I've not stepped on the treadmill at all, rather I've gotten the steps grocery shopping, running up and down the stairs putting a 2 yr old back in bed--again, and just running around playing with the kids. I'm finding I average about 12,000 steps. (If I haven't gotten 10,000 steps though I walk in circles around our living room or play wii fit--the step one and the island bicycle one rack up the most steps it seems!)

I think my new Vitamix has helped with the eating better. I was able to cure my complete sugar addiction with green smoothies. I think with the Vitamix I'm getting so many natural sugars from fruits and veggies that I don't crave sugar at all anymore.

I don't worry about what I eat or how many steps I get on Sundays though.

I haven't seen this before but I've often wondered about it because of the reference on the T-Tapp DVD. One Amazon reviewer said you could sum up the book by saying, "Buy a pedometer. Walk 10,000 steps a day." I'm tempted. I live in a pedestrian neighborhood and it's pretty easy to come up with a place to walk: getting my butt out the door with three kids is a little harder! But I am highly motivated by concrete numbers.

Here's a tip, maybe. Our computer is at counter-height and I'm finding that it isn't so hard to walk and type at the same time.

Heavenly voices sing LAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA and showers of light shine down upon my computer at this idea! When I'm low on steps it IS directly related to me sitting too much at the computer. Susan, you are a gem .

Now, to figure out how to raise my computer...

Thanks!

Love,

Hey, my keyboard is now on my printer top and I'm stepping as I type . It's not pretty - me stepping or the keyboard tower - but it works!

Thanks so much!

keep the ideas coming, please.

I've done the ped thing for years, and I swear that it's what keeps me from being more overweight than I am! On days when I'm not walking, I put it on, and if I haven't made my 10,000, then I do some time on the exercise bike, listening to ipadre podcasts. But for the record, you can park in the farthest spot, make multiple trips upstairs rather than piling things at the base of the stairs, get the mail, get the paper, just be the go-to gal for stepping and fetching, and you'd be amazed at how the steps rack up.

I lost major pounds when we moved into our house 3 years ago, and I seriously logged about 20-30,000 steps per day for two weeks.ipadre

My husband does this by walking to his fourth-floor office instead of taking the elevator...he leaves and re-enters the building so often that he easily hits 10,000 steps!

and imo up the stairs should count double

Oh but I've seen how just increasing it.. no clue on numbers helps. When I went from using a laundromat to a house we could have the washer hooked up but no drier.. adding in hanging clothes on the line really helped me drop the weight after my 3rd.

I have a friend that loves her pedometer. She tried to get me hooked but failed. My little boys wear it now.

So my friend "steps" while she's cooking, she parks at the very back of the parking lot when she goes to the store, she takes two trips to unload the dryer and puts things away in small batches. She walks in place when she's standing around talking to moms. I'm amazed when I watch her at how she finds ways to add steps.

I've never used a book or guide but I just put on a pedometer several years ago for a period of several months. And have repeated that a couple of times since. I will say the days I had to run kids around town in the car (and seemed more tired), my numbers were always less than 10K. Even just staying home to tend to house duties, I would usually get to 10K and if the kids played outside (requiring my supervision) I would easily hit 14-16K just walking up and down the sidewalk!

I had my mom (retired) try it as well and she would get to about 3-4K in a day and say "this thing's not working." I just laughed knowing that it's about 10 steps from her couch to the kitchen and about 20 steps to the bedroom. LOL

I should sooooo put it back on.

We've had our computer at standing height for a couple years. It was one of the best changes we made as far as keeping energized rather than going into "lump mode" every time we went to check e-mail "for a sec."

I counted the steps to church this morning: 700! And I estimated that I got in about 500 more pacing the lobby with my 14mo.

Congrats to you!!

Care to share a green smoothie recipe??? I'm all ears!

Thanks!

This links to Vitamix's page on green smoothies--if you scroll down you'll find my favorite kale one:

Green smoothie

My favorite spinach one is here
I don't often have green grapes so I substitute kiwi instead (I figure that's probably healthier anyway.)

I saw on orgjunkie where she is drinking green smoothies and doesn't have a Vitamix so she fills the blender with greens and water FIRST blends that up as well as possible and then adds the other stuff and blends again.

My kids love these and ask for them everyday.

That is amazing and inspiring, Melissa!
I've read that studies have shown that *fidgety* people lose weight and keep it off better than those who don't have *ants in their pants*. Just walking around in circles, or stepping while you're doing dishes - I never thought of that! Most days when I'm fairly much a lump I can get around 3700 steps in. But even a half hour walk, or (as has been mentioned) parking farther from where I'm going, even though they seem like little thing, really run up that step count. This thread has reminded me to keep movin'. Thanks.

Peace,
Nancy

I am so intrigued by this idea!! I bought a pedometer at Target last week - it was about $15.00. It's not very accurate. It seems to be a little too sensitive and overcounts steps. A couple of times, when I've bent over, it reset itself to zero.

Can anyone recommend a more accurate one that is easy to find and inexpensive?

I got this one after reading some reviews done by a book put out by Prevention magazine. (The book was "sugar Solution" really good read too.)

They said some pedometers can be off by 25% or more. This one they found to be the most accurate. (Granted this was a couple of years ago so there might be a better option now. But I've had it for 3+ years and had no problems with it at all. I'm thankful I have the strap though. It saves me all the time!)

I got a $4 one from Amazon last week to fill up an order for free shipping (I promise I only do that when the shipping would cost more ). I can't really complain for the price. It is really accurate for just going for a walk but it does count steps when I just sway side to side (as I tend to do with my baby in the back of the church) so I suppose it is over counting a bit. But, as I said, for the price it is nice to just have a ballpark.

I'm satisfied with this pedometer from Amazon, but I haven't really scrutinized it. I'm just glad that when it drops to the floor, it keeps working .

I hope to read this article this week. I'm so hopeful about all of these changes! With my increased amount of standing, my back was sore at first but now seems to be getting used to it. Yesterday I sat at the AZ Diamondback home game opener for several hours, and it felt so decadent! I did go for a few walks, but my pride kept me from stepping in place at my seat .

Love,

Good for you Angie!

The standing is working great for me as it is really strengthening my core. I particularly noticed it during Holy Week and Easter. All that kneeling usually makes me have to lean back on the pew but I didn't need to at all!

I got this pedometer and it seems pretty accurate as far as I can tell. I did over 13,000 steps the 2nd day I had it but I make a point to run/walk at least 3 miles a day so that helps me get to 10,000 a lot easier.
