Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Hello,

My name is Mindy and I just introduced myself in the Mother Nurture forum.

I have a question regarding the medication Misoprostol. I suffered an incomplete miscarriage recently. I started bleeding/cramps about 2 weeks ago, but a follow-up u/s showed that the miscarriage was incomplete, so my doctor wants me to choose between taking Misoprostol or a D/C.

Initially I did not want to take the medicine b/c my mom took it twice and thought it was horrible. She did not take pain medicine though, and I am definitely going to take the pain medicine.

I'm wondering if anyone else has taken the Misoprostol, and whether it was effective or not. I guess overall, I would like to avoid a D/C but not if the Misoprostol is a mistake to take.

Thank you in advance,
Mindy

I usually look up medication at http://www.rxlist.com

I haven't used that myself or know anyone off hand who has though so I can't address it myself.

Hi Mindy,
I am sorry about the miscarriage. I lost a baby in August '07 and I took the Misoprostol to try to avoid a D&C. I don't think it was effective for me, but I don't remember it being horrible. I didn't miscarry as was hoped. In the end, I miscarried naturally four or five weeks after the baby died. I wrote some posts on my blog in July and August of 2007 about the experience. I think this is the only one where I wrote about the Misoprostol. It's really a personal choice. I was glad to avoid the D&C, but it was difficult waiting.

I've had 3 different OB Gyn Docs, and none of them would use it. the risk (they said) of uterine rupture is too great, and irreversible, meaning they don;t know how a woman's uterus will react til taking it, and then there is no anecdote if things go wrong.
I miscarried recently, it took at least 4-5 weeks after the baby had died before I started to lose him/her.
I know that Mothering magazine had some online articles about the dangers, or maybe in a back issue?
praying for you.

PS, two U/S showed me at "incomplete" taken at one week intervals, but I just had to ride it out.
also, welcome to the boards. I'm glad you found us!

Mindy,
I am so sorry for your loss.

I have suffered three losses between the birth of my daughter in '04 and my current pregnancy. For two of those losses the baby died in-utero and would not release. I was offered the d&c or the Misoprostal. I was more reluctant for a d&c, so I used the Misoprostal at 13 weeks (the baby only grew to 7 weeks). I did really poorly, which was mostly my own fault. Being rather overwhelmed, I did not eat or drink hardly at all the morning that I administered the Misoprostal. Bleeding was rather quick and then it increased so much that I could not keep up! My mom came over mid morning to help with my kids and she brought me a coffee, which I drank. Then a few hours later, I passed out and my husband brought me to the e.r. By then the worst was over. He took me out for a high protein meal and I was feeling much better.

The next loss at 7 or 8 weeks occured without incident (however, not without heartbreak!).

The third loss was discovered at 11 weeks. The baby had lived to 9 weeks, six days. I waited only a couple more weeks to see if things would progress without needing assistance. Although, I dreaded using the Misoprostal again, I dreaded a d&c more. This time I tried to take better care of myself. I used half of the dose on a Saturday morning so my husband would be home. He brought me eggs for breakfast and lots to drink so I wouldn't be weak and dehydrated. The bleeding was so much less and quickly finished compared to the previous time. After a late morning nap, I felt fine.

Going by my experience, if you do opt for Misoprostal, make sure your body is prepared for blood loss - take your vitamins, eat green leafy veg and/or red meat the day before and drink lots of water. Make sure you have reliable help for your kids and for yourself, if it becomes necessary. Skip the coffee or anything dehydrating.

I will pray for you.

Blessings,

Thank you all for your suggestions and prayers.   I still have not decided what to do but I appreciate hearing your experiences. I have waited 8 weeks now, and my husband and I will decide what to do this week.

Thank you again for your help! Hope everyone had a Merry Christmas!

I am sorry for your loss, too. After two miscarriages my doctor noticed uterine polyps (perhaps from the miscarriages?) and removed them by D&C. My experience was generally good. I was told that after this "cleaning out" my uterus would feel 18 again and be very fertile. It was! I have had 4 babies since that procedure and no more miscarriages. My cycles also became much lighter (they had been abnormally heavy beforehand). I know not all D&Cs are happy experiences, but I am glad I had mine, for what it's worth! I will pray for you.

Thank you, ladies, for reading and providing some insight and encouragement for me!

After lots of consideration, I did decide to try the misoprostol (with pain meds), and it was not as bad as I was expecting at all. The pain was so minimal that I thought it had not worked, but after talking to my midwife, it seems that it did. I will have another u/s this coming week to make sure.

Lisa, thank you for telling me about the uterine rupture concern. I asked my midwife about it, as well as read several articles online. I have had a c-section, and the medicine is definitely not safe for vbacs. I am glad I know that, so I can be sure to never accept it during labor. My midwife said that it was not a concern for me using it in this way.

Kristina, thank you for your recommendations too...I followed all of them :)

Thank you all especially for your prayers!
