Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I bought one of those blood sugar monitors last night. My readings today have been 75 fasting, 90 two hours after breakfast and 109 2 hours after lunch. With these numbers, do you think it's a good possibility I can pass the required 3 hour glucose test? It's upsetting to me that they won't use the numbers I get from pricking my fingers day in and day out. I do everything to avoid things like white flour and sugar and then they are going to force me to drink an fake orange soda drink with twice as many sugars as the first test. I'm not doing anything differently with my diet since the first test. How can I expect to pass the second test if it's going to be double the amount of glucose from the first test. If I don't pass I don't get to deliever with a midwife and it makes me so sad. I don't get to take the test until next week so I have about 2 weeks to wonder about this. Maybe I should look on the bright side and think that I have 2 weeks to pray that things turn out okay.

Did you watch the dvd that comes with the monitor? I found that to be incredibly helpful. If you start now with keeping your carb servings down - 3-4 servings per each meal & 2-3 servings per morning & afternoon snack -that should make a big difference. Just being aware of where your carbs are coming from is so important. I (stupidly) used to make spaghetti & meatballs for dinner (high carbs) & then have lima beans (high carbs) on the side. These days I'll still have the spaghetti & meatballs but I'll take less pasta & have raw veggies or something lower carb like steamed broccoli & cauliflower.

Hope that helps!

Your numbers look really good to me. I wish I could help on the 3hr. thing, but I have no idea. I'm with you on the logic of it though...

I had GD diabetes with my last pregnancy (diet controlled), and even though I had a list of numbers, it is best if you hear it from your doctor. I think you should go and take the 3 hour test, and if you fail it, the Diabetes counselor can help you with your numbers. The first thing the ladies said to us is "it's NOT YOUR FAULT." GD comes from how the placenta is reacting with your body. It is great that you are already on a good diet, but if your body has it, the best way to know is to take the test and find out the best way to keep it under control.

I will keep you in my prayers, and I agree that 2 weeks to pray instead of worry is the best route!

Ask them to let you drink grape juice (real 100% grape juice) instead of the glucola. It has the exact same sugar content ounce-for-ounce, but because it is natural sugar, your body processes it faster. I have always failed the 1 hour glucose after drinking glucola because I never drink soda or other things with high fructose corn syrup, so my body isn't used to it. But my OB last time let me retake the 1-hour using grape juice and that time I passed just fine.

Those numbers are great. I have had GD all three times. This last time, they let me forgo some of the testing and just monitor at home and with finger sticks at the office. Having trouble with sugar as I do, the glucose tolerance test is very hard for me. The last time I did it, I became very faint. My OB wanted to have me take that test at 16 weeks and then again at 24 weeks. It was my maternal fetal med. specialist who said I didn't need to. They had me check four times a day and call with my numbers each week.
However, I do know that there are plenty of doctors who just won't budge about that test.
Good luck!
