Yipes- does any one really have 45 thousand cubes around the house for the golden bead work? I have two real thing thousand cubes, and I want to figure out what I can print or make that would stand in for the real thing. I do have a template for printing an actual cube, but I don't feel like printing, cutting and pasting 43 of them. Is that just being lazy? Ideas?

Why would you need 45 thousand cubes?
I have one bead thousand and 10 wooden ones and have been able to do any necessary work with them.

Me too. I haven't had a need for 45.

the 45 is for a particular exercise...and its escapes me at the moment...right now I am too nauseated to look it up, but! If you are patient, I will tell you all about it tomorrow!

The 45 layout? While it is nice to do, I don't think it's absolutely necessary. There are a few activities better suited to schools where they have a full complement of materials.

Yes, I was looking at one particular exercise in Karen's on-line album. I think the 45 layout looked interesting just to show the largeness of the work, but I was wondering if it was a vital exercise. Maybe I will skip it.

IN the online MWEI album,it shows the 45 layout, but only goes up to 1000. That way you would need 45 units, 10's, and 100's, but not the 1000's, and I think still get the point across.

When I did it with my dd, I just had her stack the numbers and add the beads on to the next number, so avoiding the whole 45 thing. It isn't quite the same, but it served our purpose without breaking the bank.

Thanks for all the suggestions. With the Montessori math, I feel like I am a loose canon... I have a little knowledge, which is dangerous.
I do so admire the brilliance of the method , though. The more we do the more I think it is such a great way to learn. I just wish *I* was quicker to catch on to how to do all the presentations. I just have to keep reminding myself that Maria Montessori would not have set up an exercise that would be hard or confusing for children. It's all simple when you know what you're doing (which half the time I feel like I don't ).
Some days I wish I had gone with a spoon fed math program, or something scripted like Shiller Math- just because it would have been easier for me... but the Montessori math is so worth all my time. I would do it again.

I agree, Melinda. I have done many math programs and approaches in my 12 years (off and on) of homeschooling (plus my years as a school teacher), and the more I learn about the Montessori math , the more I am sold. But it does take so much effort to learn to present it.

An above post-er mentions what I was going to say: that 45 pieces are only needed for the other categories. The most you'll need for thousands is 9, and as the photo above shows, those can be made from wood (or cardboard or milk cartons, or any other material that works).
ETA: I've just reviewed my own album to be sure, and can't find anywhere we need more than 9 thousands at a time. Now, there could be something at the elementary level (which I have limited knowledge of and what I know has been buried in my mind for this year while I focus on 3-6 year olds, which of course helped all of us adults, so I would use with almost any age) which requires more, but I'm not sure.
The hundreds and thousands get heavy, especially when using real glass beads, so beyond the basic presentations, wood or other alternatives are an excellent idea. I have seen some alternatives for the tens as well, but I personally and professionally prefer to keep the tebs glass as well (or heavier/sturdier plastic - I really don't like the light weight ones - they're just not as beautiful or fun to work with!).
The change game (aka bank game) and all the operations with the golden beads will require more thousands, but we/I encourage the children to keep the thousands low in various places of the operations so that they don't need more than 9. Later, with the small and large bead frames and other materials, they will get into 10,000 and higher. By that time, the children are able to think in more symbolic terms, moving towards abstraction.
I have so fallen in love with the Montessori math material - I've always loved math and found it "easy" - not that my grades in school always showed it because I thought about it different from others.... anyway, since being fully immersed in the math materials these last few weeks in training, I am 150% sold - there is not going back or utilizing other programs until my son is much older.
