Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My ds has gone through the Montessori pink reading series and now is into the blue series. Should I leave all the pink reading materials out? He wants to read them all again- great, that is fine- but he has a tough time with transition and seems to be clinging to them instead of moving on with the blue. Some of the pink books he has read over and over, so I know he has them mastered. He just seems wary of the change in color. I do truly believe that if I put the blue words on pink cards he'd be happy as a clam

Same with the Childsize masterpieces... do you leave the whole series out as you move ahead? The shelves are getting very crowded.

I'm transitioning my dd from pink to blue right now also. I am keeping very few pink things out, but I just don't have the shelf space to keep it all out and still make it look inviting. However, I don't have the same problem with dd not wanting to move on. She is eager for a change in scenery, so to speak. Also, dd has mastered the pink cards, word lists, command cards, and other items, but is not yet fluent with the pink level readers, so I will definitely be keeping them out longer than the other things.
I still need to print up some more blue stuff, so it will be a gradual change over here.

Melinda,
If one of the kids is really enjoying working with a certain material, I leave it out.

Having said that, I do spend a good bit of time every couple of months just looking at the shelves with fresh eyes. Something is always being neglected, not used, and sometimes abused. Purging always gives the shelves a fresh look and the kids are always very attracted to the new things put out and the new arrangement.

I wanted to mention too that sometimes it's all in the presentation. Perhaps putting the pink readers in a pretty basket and setting out the blue series in a very attractive way. Maybe encouraging (ok slightly pushing) work with the blue series until say a Friday and then offer free choice as to what reader he chooses.

We don't do Childsize Masterpieces - is there a lot of material? I was wondering if you could set up a small accordion file with some of the art he's worked with and allow him to set out a favorite piece of artwork on the shelf once a week while you keep moving forward with the program? You can get some pretty little easels at Michael's to set out his favorite piece. Streamlining, but not getting rid of something he has a real attraction to?

Don't know if this has helped at all Melinda?

I keep my Child Sized Masterpieces standing in one basket with the spines of each level sharpied with the same color on the spine so I can pull them out easily. The kids like this basket and GENERALLY keep them in there the way they are supposed to. I tried only pulling out one at a time, but my one dd likes to peruse the different folders in one go....so they are now happy in this basket all together.

One thing I have been doing is using these postcards and some others (from dover and recommended by CHC) featuring an artist of the month. I found some clear acrylic holders (from a store going out of business..they used these 5x7 display stands for prices and such of the merchandise) and they are the perfect size for sliding 2 postcards in there back to back. We change the cards regularly. This has been fun and has kept things fresh. Our featured artist this month is Audubon...it is nice seeing something ALIVE scattered about the room this month!

God love you!
