Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Meredith,

I love how everyone was able to get something out of the one lesson on dinosaurs!

We do something similar with our Discovery Table. It sure does pique everyone's interest, doesn't? If I can find a snack related item to use or make, I like to put that on there as well.

Meredith,
Do you keep all four baskets out and accessible all the time? I think that my littles would keep "strewing" everything, everywhere on their own.

I does sound like something that I would really like to do.

Meredith- I love your basket idea! That is neat how all your kids found activities for their own level! Actually I just reorganized the toys and now have 2 big baskets just begging to be filled with goodies! But what themes to do...?

That's the beauty of the "Discovery" it can be anything that you think would strike up some interest and exploration!! I imagine you probably already have something like this around, just pop it into one of your big baskets Have fun and DO share

Joann, my *plan* is to have them accessible, but not really to the 2 yo I can tell you a thing or two about his strewing capabilities

Blessings!

Looks wonderful! Are the books all yours, or are some form the library? I never like to buy a book before I know if we like it...

I have been having fun setting up my learning room shelves along these lines! For example after the First Great Lesson I put out a bunch of books about volcanoes from the library, volcano 3-part cards and felt activity. I have a landforms shelf with 3-part cards, collage tray, and book (Geography A-Z). For science I have a weather shelf with books about weather and sheets to make a weather journal, and some weather activity cards. I'll probably do a plant shelf next since we are doing Botany presentations. Of course the nice thing about the baskets is I could put them throughout the house, when my shelves are full!

Andrea,
Would you care to share a little more detail on the felt activity for volcanoes? Was this something homemade or a purchased felt activity? I'm intrigued.

Valerie,
I made the felt "parts of a volcano" activity based on this picture from Priority Montessori. All the different parts are made from felt and seperate so the child can build the volcano and then place the labels. I drew (and laminated of course ) a control chart.

Thanks for the link to Priority Montessori, Andrea. Wish some of their products weren't so expensive the bird eggs for example, but lots of good ideas here! I really wish I'd been able to put together my topic boxes before the baby was born, but oh well. Right now I'm starting to do very, very easy things again in small chunks. I felt pretty good Saturday, and then was clobbered with mastitis/sinus infection/yuck yesterday. My only goal right now is to laminate some fish cards for my 4 yo so he'll stop getting into so much trouble!!

Meredith,

I just started thinking about this idea as well. I found some very small nice baskets at Target's $1 section. I then put a basket for calendar activitites, ocean cards (which I need to do the shells), and animal basket cards. These basket they can then get themselves and do. I really like doing "centers" like this too b/c it seems to draw them to the activity.

Wow, that priority Montessori has some really interesting and unique stuff! Way too $$$ for my pocketbook, but a great place to grab some ideas, right?
Andrea I'd love to see pics of your felt volcano parts. I might just have t do this one myself, too! I HAVE some felt!

And Meredith, I have no idea what the problem is, but my computer just does not like to open your blog. I keep getting error messages. Today I figured out if I wait long enough, and click through a few error messages (something about scripts????) I can get it to load. Hooray!

If I use internet e plorer it works much better. I think there are just so many goodies to load that my computer completely freaks out...so to speak...lol

God love you!
