Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

So, What are your favorites for 12th grade english. I am especially looking for one that will prepare ds for college writing and reading. . . He most likely will major in Engineering (so english isn't his favorite, since he more of a math and science guy I feel this is my chance to prepare him well). We have been doing Seton english for 9, 10 and 11 and well feel we could use a change.

Bumping up. I am looking at Seton (we have done this for 9,10 and 11 and are ready for something else), kolbe, angelicum (forget what it is called but the Modern lit. course), or even sonlight british lit. Hoping to challange him (lit and english are not favorites or stong points but I want to ready him for college). I would love any opinions on these programs or others I haven't mentioned.

Please. . ?

Thanks

Were you doing Seton English through them, or on your own?   If you worked on it yourselves, it might help to just sign up for one course with them - I think you can anyway - and then they'll assign the writing assignments and give him grades and feedback.   I don't know any of the other programs, or Seton either, for 12th grade.   From what I've heard from other moms, Kolbe is challenging. I haven't been much help at all I'm afraid - I just wanted to give you some feedback even if it's useless.

Hope you find a great program for him!

Did just seton english for 9,10,11. They tend to have very specific points they are looking for in essays. It drives us nuts because ds basically spends time trying to figure out what they want instead of think for himself. This is my oldest, sometimes I feel he is the experiment! I hate how long it takes seton to grade! Very hard to learn from previous assignments if they take weeks and weeks to get back!

Any one else? Sorry, I am getting stressed for next year a bit early!

Wish I could help you Barb.. I don't have anyone even in high school yet.

Do you HAVE to use someone's curriculum? I know lots of people end up there because of college requirements. But I was thinking how fun it could be to include some good books but also something that might target his interests a bit better than the standard lists. You know.. sorta a carrot or reward.. after you do 2 standard books you get to do a more "fun" book type of thing.

If you haven't looked at Jensen's Format Writing before now, this book provides a great expository writing course. Engineers need to know how to express themselves on paper. (So says my father, the EE Ph.D from Caltech, who hires and collaborates with engineers on a regular basis.) I might lean toward some expository writing (perhaps related to science experiments or other life experiences) and a LOT of reading - Great Books, science fiction (PM me for a list), scientist/engineer biographies, etc.

Thanks I pm'd you Nancy!

I have been looking into this text I found online:

The Well Crafted Argument byFred White and Simone Billings. I currently am feeling I may use this as the main English while supplementing with other literature books (like Nancy suggests). Hopefully finding lit. that have study guides for discussion and perhaps essay suggestions.
