Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Any thoughts on (or been there done that experince) on the best things to do the last year to 1 1/2 years your dc are home before they leave for college. I know, most of this prep has been done, the foundation hopefully laid in 18 years at home. . . but, still, a large percent of college kids fall away. What are your opinions of the best way to spend this last precious time with your kids to prevent them slipping away from church. I'd love ds to have a more mature, deepened faith before he left. How to foster that. . .

We: read bible as a family daily; say rosary daily (one decade with all kids together); pray together; go to church weakly (like this to be more but church is 25-30 minutes one way; ds (my 11th grader) is in music with the teens - they have a monthly "teen and family" Mass at church with acustic guitars for Mass and electric for praise songs after.

I'd love others experiences and opinions. I feel like something is missing - like I could do more.

I think that the best aid for me when I went off to University (after good devotional practices) was that I was already in the habit of reading books which helped me develop an adult understanding of my faith. I started at home with reading plenty of CS Lewis and Chesterton but continued by reading such books as The Catholic Catechism by Father Hardon.

I think that spending some time stretching one's intellect in the study of our Faith is invaluable. Particularly, if there is a good chance that one will encounter those who will attack the faith under the guise of 'free-thinking' and 'reason'.

Now there are other ways to achieve the same end, myhusband normally learns more about his faith by way of good orthodox blogs. (and Catholism for Dummies back when he was in RCIA)

Discussion, discussion, discussion. You're probably already doing that, but I just wanted to mention it again. DD-18 and I are still doing this even though she's in college (she's local so it helps) and we still send each other stuff through e-mail, recommend books, read spiritual material to each other from time to time, etc. All the while *some* discussion about the faith is going on at the dinner table, so I'm hoping 13-yo, who doesn't tend to talk much, but is always observing/listening, will at least absorb some of it and be able to regurgitate when called upon to do so .

You are probably doing this already, but I think that frequent (at least once a month) confession is so valuable.

I think staying involved with the church on campus helped me maintain my faith through college. Yes, it was a liberal atmosphere, but I was at Mass every single week (more than once per weekend, most of the time) and I met lots and lots of Catholic students there.

I've tried to encourage my own children to find ways to serve our parish for just this reason.

Nancy, I agree! DS recently has played guitar for youth mass once per month. I am so glad our church started this because hopefully the kids will want to continue such an involvement in college. And when you play for Mass - you go regularly plus meet other regular Mass attendees.
