ds gets straight A's on his work except for Spanish, where he is barely squeaking by with a C to C-!
I've been told that many universities, even state schools now require 3 years of a language for admittance, even in the non Arts (BA vs BS) majors.
I've looked into it a bit- and it seems true- for him to go into an enginnering program- most certainly a Science! they are asking for 3 years in High School.
I'd love to hear any advice/experience you may have had with this.

PS, he is finishing up year 2, so the debate is whether to have him agonize through a 3rd year, and have it adversely affect his GPA, or would NOT taking a 3rd year adversely affect his future more???

Do you have a list of schools he's considering? I'd look at those requirements first. If some require 3 years, perhaps he should take more language. Check, though, to see if all 3 years need to be the same language. Maybe he'd do better taking one year of a second foreign language or ASL.

Can he take a summer program that would count for credit?
In my experience summer programs were usually easier or at the least shorter? Also, if he only has two credits could he just take it in college to "make it up"?

yes, most do require 3 years. if anything, the tird year "could" be taken at university, but the problem is a level three of a language in a university would undoubtedly be MORE difficult, thus necessitating him to "backtrack" and take "brushup" class to prepare for level three- all at a high cost. yes, they all have to be the same language. our original intent was to do two years Spanish, two years latin, but now a bit too late we realize this does no good.

yes, this is what we are looking into now!
I'll say, I really admire moms who can homeschool high school. I feel like we are barely treading water and ds is IN high school! (and yes, we are pleased with the guidance counseling and everything- I'm just a triple-fact checker and information junkie!!!)

Wow, I had heard that you needed 3 years, I didn't realize that they all needed to be in the same language. Thanks for the heads-up.

If he is homeschooled, I would actually talk to the admissions office and find out if the requirements for homeschoolers different. I remember Cafi Cohen talking about how some colleges may technically require so many credits of foreign language, but they might skip that requirement if the student has been deeply delving into something else like a non-traditional subject.
Also, is your son having more of a problem with the written or the verbal parts of Spanish? If his written comprehension is decent, he might be able to pass like a CLEP test which may not have a verbal component.
And depending on the school, they might not make him take a certain level of Spanish once he were in college. Most colleges used to not have a placement test for foreign language. So he may be able to take 100 level Spanish to make up his third year instead of 300 level, depending on the school. For instance at my college you picked out your own classes, but an adviser had to sign off just to make sure you met the pre-requisites for upper level courses and you weren't taking a class you didn't need. At my friend's school, they told him almost every class he had to take for the first two years. So every school varies.
So, I would really talk to the homeschool liaison at his top three or four schools. The requirements might be more flexible than you think.

He is not homeschooled. I think what is difficult, is having to make choices NOW about what he may or may not do/go more than 2 years from now.
