Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I've been reading my children picture books for the past 25 years, and I sadly have to admit that the days of sitting with a pile of books in the afternoon is beginning to slow way down.

I want to enjoy this summer, delving into old and new "to us" picture books with my youngest. I know I will never stop picking up picture books, but with schoolwork reading, we have definitely had to slow down our fun reading.

What are your favorite, not to be missed, picture books. Funny, thought provoking, sad, happy??...I want all suggestions...or someone may be able to direct me to a list already compiled somewhere out there.

I find it much easier to log onto our interloan library service and order up a list of books, than to go to the library and get lost in the stacks of fluff offered. iykwim

Thanks for any and all suggestions!

I don't know if we have a must read thread, but we do have a favorite picture book of all time thread (or two) that may good reference points for you. I'll have to look for those later. (And see if I still agree with what I posted then - funny how our preferences can change. )

Many of the picture books that my young children ask me to read over and over again can be found here. Other picture books that we have enjoyed, but that aren't necessarily asked for repeatedly, can be found here.

Happy reading!

So I consider these threads to include people's "must reads"

If you were stranded...picture books?
Poll:Is your favorite picture book...?
Running list of ABSOLUTE Favorites
When You were a kid...

Let's see, I'll narrow mine to 5 must reads ( very arbitrary ):

Song of the Swallows - Leo Politi
The Miracle of St. Nicholas - GLoria Whelan
The Little House - Virginia Lee Burton
Peppe the Lamplighter - Elisa Barton, Ted Lewin
Two Many Pumpkins - Linda White

OK, I can't stop...
Earl the Squirrel - Don Freeman
Pasqual and the Kitchen Angels - Tomie dePaola
One Thousand Tracings - Lita Judge
Apples to Oregon - Deborah Hopkinson
Hog Music - Mary-Claire Helldorfer

I just checked my "Stranded on an island" list and there is overlap so I am consistent to some degree but obviously can't really decide...
