Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

This has nothing whatsoever to do with Christmas, but given the poll going about why we don't post more books, I wanted to do this one before I forgot!
Whisper from the Woods is a beautiful OOP picture book that explains in a story form the inevitable cycle of life, death, and rebirth in the natural world. Detailed woodland drawings provide opportunities for children to identify common woodland flora and fauna. The trees and the storm are personified in the fantastic artwork. I can't believe this book didn't win the Caldecott! The picture of the storm itself blowing in over the fall forest is truly memorable. Synopsis: A little tree grows in the forest until she becomes a mother herself with all her children around her, loving one another and whispering together. One night, a fierce storm blows her down and she falls. Caught first by her children, she then slips to the ground at the feet of her children-trees. There she lies, becoming part of the forest floor, while her children grow and, in their own turn, drop seeds that sprout into a new generation of trees. My children loved this book for years, even into young adulthood. I think it addresses in a reverent way the inevitability of death, the fear that children have of losing their own parents, and the necessity for each succeeding generation to grow and assume their proper place in this world.
This is a picture book that we have found to endure over the years and to be unforgettable.
