I'm planning to do FIAR with my dd this fall, and I'm crazy enough to want to co-ordinate it with our Tour the Continents for my ds (7), at least a bit.
However, I can't seem to find any good picture books/stories taking place in S. American countries (esp. if Mexico is N. America--OL Guadalupe doesn't count).
Any suggestions?

There really are very few - it's a much neglected picture book area. A couple I can think of right off the top of my head are:
Peru
Tonight is Carnaval - About a family in Peru who are making preparations for attending Carnaval – illustrated with beautiful arpilleras. Info on music/instruments, Andes, rural farm life, llamas/alpacas and weaving, Carnaval/Lent
Columbia
Saturday Sancocho - A girl and her grandmother barter a dozen eggs at the market square to get the ingredients to cook their traditional Saturday chicken sancocho. Includes recipe.
I've searched for South and Central American books before and if I can find where I made a list I'll post more.

While looking to see if I had ever posted my South America book ideas before, I found Dawn's post with the great book list she had for "Tour the Continents" South America.
And does this section of the "Tour the Continents" cover Central America? - if so I do have some Central America picture books.

One of the books Cay recommends in Catholic Mosaic is about Costa Rica ... and it was written by Elizabeth Loch! Juanita and Our Lady of the Angels is bilingual, so you can get Spanish in at the same time! If you'd like to borrow my copy -- just e-holler!

Jan Brett's The Umbrella is set in the Costa Rican rain forest and was a favorite while we lived there and saw the wildlife in the book regularly. There is also a very cool book that I can't put ny hands on right now to find the author but it is called Somewhere in the World Right Now...it is about what is happening in different parts of the world at the same time and mentions every continent...took us on a fun rabbit trail about time zones!

I'm months late but I loved "Carolina's Gift" based in Peru by Katacha Diaz.
Also, "Love and Roast Chicken" in Peru by Barbara Knutson.

Homeschool Share does have units for some of the books mentioned

Check back at Homeschool Share in August. We will have three new units that you may be interested in; they are already written and submitted, we just have to wait until after our contest to post them. Two are set in South America as well as another set in Central America.
Also, if you are looking for anything else, you can check the Geography Index at HSS; it's not perfect, but it does include many FIAR titles as well as HSS titles.

Don't know if you are after any more titles but a nice one I have is My Mama's Little Ranch on the Pampas. The author Maria Cristina tells us about her first year soent on a small ranch in Argentina on the Pampas.
I do recall borrowing some beautiful titles from the library on the Amazon and the animals along it.

Adding Water Boy: A Story of Two Little Boys from a Town in Brazil- Erik Hjorth Nielsen.
Two cousins enjoying town life near a mountain, the town floods and everyone cheerily evacuates. It is a common occurrence.
*Two pictures do depict the boys clearly unclothed by the mountain pool.

We studied South America in Classical Conversations this year. We read these and enjoyed them: St. Rose of Lima, Explore South America, A Picture Book of Simon Bolivar (you may want to read through these 1st esp. as the deal w/revolts, fighting etc.), St. Martin de Porres, The Biography of Chocolate (interesting to go through and talk about its origins - we did not read it cover to cover). I know some of these aren't picture books per se...

Biblioburro: A True Story from Columbia (Jeanette Winter) - based on the life of a man in Columbia who took books by burro to the remote Columbian villages.
Looks like there is another book coming out in 2011 on the same topic - Waiting for Biblioburro. Anyone else notice this trend - a picture book on some obscure/lesser known but intriguing person is published and often another one or two right after it. Almost like the publishing houses don't want to be outdone. I'm especially noticing with with ethnic (to US) and female figures.
