Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

We're starting to read the Lobel books this month. We're a little weary these days, after a loaded early spring schedule, including some intensive (for us) bookwork on caterpillars and other bugs. I already know that we're going to use the Frog and Toad books to practice reading for my 8yo, and I can get science books from the library for my avid reader. All the Frog and Toads, Mouse Tales, Owl at Home, On Market Street, and The Rose in My Garden will be read-alouds with the younger bunch.

Does anyone have any suggestions for low-impact activities with good mileage in them? I thought of doing a toad house but thought that it might be a little too high-maintenance or permanent for us at this stage. We don't have a good spot around us to find amphibian eggs--too bad, because I loved watching polliwogs as a girl--although there must be some somewhere because we've got toads, tree frogs, and bullfrogs enough for my son to find.

Any frog and toad unit studies that you'd recommend? Anything for the other books? I haven't read them yet, except the Rose, which is sort of like a "House that Jack Built" rhyme.

A thread with Living Books about frogs

Here are some mini frog&toad units/activities from E-naturalist:
Warts the Difference
Hands Off
Frog Popsicle
Zig Zag

Enchanted Learning has lots of printables.

Be part of Frogwatch

Lots of interactive frog info at Something Froggy

Frog and Toad checkers

Are you up for frog dissection? If not here's a virtual dissection

And I've got owl ideas too, but no more time. I'll get back to that.

We actually did a good bit with owls around January, but I'd love to see more. We still have some owl pellets to dissect--the kids loved that. Definitely looking for more creative/artsy ideas for any of it, though.
