Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

We used sequential spelling this year, I think Dd improved greatly but it is rather boring...we'd gulp 4+ lessons at once to try and move through the book, but overall I give it very high ratings, much better than random lists out of reading/science/history books for Dd. Spelling sequentially really tickled her once she caught on. Seeing how words build on each other and common endings/prefixes continually added made an impression this year. (Finally!)

Hi Mary,
I posted about Sequential Spelling here back in January. I really like it and am thrilled on days like today, when my spelling-challenged dd gets every word correct!

Mary,
You might want to look at Better Spelling in 5 Minutes a Day. It's a fun way to learn spelling rules using quick ideas and memory techniques. It was recently recommended to me but I've not used it yet. I plan to use it next school year.

Mary, SL says start at book 1 regardless of age. I am excited about this program bc both kids can use it.

it says 180 lessons, so I would think that is enough for one yr. even if they are simple?

I started at book 1 for a 7 yo and 9 yo, who are working together. We are going very slowly -- about 2-3 lessons each week. So we will not even be halfway through the first book when we end school for the year in a week and a half. BUT, even with such slow progress through the book, I still see great improvement in dds' spelling.

First and foremost, don't sweat it. 8 is still young for spelling concerns, esp. with a boy. Congrats on his fluent reading and that alone is going to help his spelling tremendously.

Be sure to read what Andrew Pudewa has to say about spelling and teaching it in an auditory way, then look at his Phonetic Zoo spelling program.

Trust me on this, I know from personal experience with my own son. We had been through many different programs before Phonetic Zoo. Good luck!

Victoria, i know you are right about not sweating it, and yet, when i opened the CAT (we have to assess each year), i realized my son will not do well on the spelling test. The test is composed of sight words and the student is asked to pick the correct spelling amongst a list of phonetically correct spellings.

i have read A Pudewa articles and have often agreed with him regarding writing. i did not realize he had a spelling program. i'm wondering if you tried the Sequential Spelling as well and preferred Phonetic Zoo?

My son has always struggled with spelling. I knew he would score below average on the spelling portion of standardized tests, and he does. It somehow helps to not be surprised, but I understand your concerns with CAT.

Sorry, never have tried Sequential Spelling so can't compare it to Phonetic Zoo. Zoo sold me because ds could do the program on his own with one less subject for me to teach

Mary, I just realized that your son is only 7. Pudewa doesn't even recommend a formal spelling course until 4th grade. See, now you can give yourself a long break
