Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

This is this year's winner:

Criss Cross

Has anybody read it? The reviews are not encouraging

OTOH, The Penderwicks, which was delightful, won the National Book Award for Young People’s Literature last November, but was shut out of the awards.

Go figure.

Average customer review--two stars!!! Amazing.

I've stopped looking to Newbery for "must-reads" anymore. "The Tale of Despereaux," for example, was quite disappointing--even depressing. "Crispin: The Cross of Lead" was another Newbery winner with serious problems, at least for Catholics.

I've got it on reserve at the library but I'm 7th on the list, so it'll be a while...

I know, I got a post about the award winners up early in the day, but I used up my computer time on that instead of hitting the library's reserve system. I've got a pile of books on the way now, though! I'll post reviews on my blog as I read them. I was #6 or 7 on the reserve list for almost everything, though.

Did anyone listen to the ALA webcast of the awards? You were all probably busy at that time of day, like me!

Good entry. I, too, was thrilled for Henry and Mudge. They are my favorite "easy readers" of all time.

Hey Lissa, while we are talking about all this, do you have any insight into the "Newbery" vs. "National Book Award" thing? Is it a friendly relationship? A political split? Or just an alternative? Golden Globe Vs. Oscar?
