OK, Chari, these questions are really fun. May I add another? What is your all-time favorite biographical book?
For me there is no question, for about 20 years now I have loved A Severe Mercy by Sheldon Vanauken.

I agree wholeheartedly -- however, to be honest, I don't think I've read all of it yet. I read the first 200-300 pages than had to put it down to get into something else. I think picked it up again and have read bits and pieces voer the last few years, so I think I've finished it. Talk about a living book! Weigel is passionate abut JP2's life and message and really wants to share it with all -- I think it'd be great to teach history, religion, politics, economics, philosophy and just about any other subject for a high schooler....

Once again, I find it hard to answer an all-time favorite... I haven't chimed in the other threads because I couldn't decide, and realized I don't read fiction that much. But now this topic, I have too many bios that I love. Autobios included, I guess if the criteria is rereading, Story of a Soul would be all-time favorite.
But right behind is A Severe Mercy and A Treasure in Clay (Bishop Sheen) as far as great impact on my life. I agree about A Witness to Hope, but I haven't finished it yet!!!

Oh, Irene, I've loved this book for a long time, too! And this is the second time in two weeks that someone has brought it up. Must be time for me to reread it. 
I also love Witness to Hope and also C.S. Lewis's Surprised by Joy and A Grief Observed. I know there are others, but my mind is mush right now.

The Story of Ruby Bridges is my all time favorite biographical book. She broke through the color barrier to attend a school which was ordered to be desegregated. She was the only child in her class. They had a white teacher from the "North" teach her all year. It was a lonely and scary time for a 6 year old. Her bravery paved the way for me to spend five years teaching the most wonderful students in the world!!!!!! I taught in an all Africian American school. I loved teaching and the students were the best part!

I wholeheartedly agree with everything Mary said about A Witness To Hope. Love, love, love that book!

I forgot that I just loved Story of the Trapp Family Singers. I know I found out later that she might have had a ghost writer, but it's still good reading!!
