I'm very curious. We use the New American Bible, St. Joseph Medium Size Edition, 1986. I may have to get a bigger one, as the print size seems to be shrinking!

I read the Orthodox Study Bible. The text is the New King James Version. I like the Revised Standard Version too. Ignatius Press sells a nice one.

I like the RSV (I have the Ignatius one but found less expensive ones for my kids a few years back) though dh prefers the New American.
Paula, those St. Joseph Medium Size Editions are what I got for RCIA this year and the print IS small!

My dh and I read the Ignatius Press Revised Standard Version. I also have a Oxford Press Catholic Study Bible. And my dc have the Catholic Answer Bible. We also have a copy of the Prove It! Teen Bible as well as the Douay Rheims Bible. And when my dh was working on his masters, he had to have a copy of the New Jerseleum Bible.
Yes, we have more Bibles that people living in our house!

Another vote for the RSV - Catholic Edition.
Though I am saving my pennies to buy a Douay Rheims as well. I am not at all a fan of the New American Bible. I just don't like the way it reads.

Revised Standard Version Catholic Edition is the one I read, too. I think there's a larger print one...although all I can find right now is Ignatius and Scepter versions.
I have various translations of the Bible around the house, also. When in college Scott Hahn really encouraged lining up different translations to get a feel for the passages. Jerusalem, Confraternity, Douay Rheims, Knox are a few I use.

Oh, and the Navarre Bible, which is the RSVCE with extra commentary. The commentary is terrific.

I use the Ignatius RSVCE Bible. 
We also have many others, a large Catholic Family Bible which is NAV, Dhouey Rhimes (sp?), assorted "teen" rsv-ce Bibles, and then a large collection of old family Bibles (mostly protestant) including my Grandma's German one, and a very old KJV from my English Grandfather.
For my Ignatius (I actually have two- one for downstairs and school time, and one upstairs on my nightstand- how's that for the height of laziness?  ,) I bought the tabs, which I really like. We have started "sword drills" which were suggested by the apologist who came to our Jan. homeschool meeting. I give out a book, chapter and verse, and when they find it, the boys get a "prize" like an m&m or something like that. He, the apologist, said it would help build familiarity with the order of the Bible.

We have RSV-CE, NAB, Douay-Rheims and Navarre. But I have an incomplete set of Navarre. Started reading the Gospels (Navarre) last year (it's my favorite!!!) but stopped after finishing Matthew, and went back to RSV-CE and NAB so we can hurry and get through the 14 books (Jeff Cavins' Great Bible Adventure). We're at Maccabees right now. After this I plan to go back to Navarre and start at the Pentateuch and read everything from there. The Douay-Rheims is the "bathroom Bible", and from time to time I read it but it confuses me so much (books like Paralipomenon, and why are there 4 Kings books? -- so it's nice to have the other 3 for comparison and clarification). DD-15 has a Teen NAB with commentary/questions written by Amy Welborn, and she loves it. DS-10 has an Ignatius RSV-CE. The little ones have the Catholic Picture Bible. We used to have that little white Bible with cartoon-like pics that toddlers love, but now I don't know where it is.

I've had the New American version forever.
Lately I keep seeing references to the Ignatius Press Revised Standard Version and I know it's recommended by MODG so I just ordered us one to use in our hs.
Not sure how big the difference is but we'll be using the Ignatius RSV once we get it.
Most hsers I know prefer the Douay Rheims. Can anyone tell me why?

The Douay Rheims is a held to be most faithfully translated from St. Jerome's Latin Vulgate.

NAB - I got a copy of The New Catholic Answer Bible..
I love looking things up online in the Douay Rheims for the "poetry" of the language.
I got the "My First Catholic Bible" - NRSV - for the kids.. I like it beacuse it's the familiar Bble stories with pictures but the text is straight from the Bible.
Confirmation here is in 6th or 7th grade (every other year) and we'll get them an "adult" Bible of their own then. (I have 2 years before needing to know which Bible I want to get them though )

I have been wondering... what is the Latin Vulgate? When looking at the progression of the Bible, the assorted terminology assigned to the different versions does me in! Is there a book anyone can recommend? I do have a book, actually more of a booklet, on where we got the Bible, but I was wondering if there was something more in depth?

I don't know of any particular book on the development of different translations. The Vulgate is the 5th century translation by St. Jerome of the Greek scriptures into Latin. He was commissioned by Pope Damasus I to translate the scriptures in to the "public language," which at that time was Latin.

I like to read several versions. I love the "old" language of the KJV. I like the NKJV because it makes it a little easier to understand.
I grew up with NIV.
I have seen alot of bible studies that now use the New Living Translation.

I bought the New American Bible on tape since it is the edition used at Mass. I've become increasingly unhappy with the translation. Fortunately, I've been listening without the children. When I heard the story of Susanna, a model of purity and modesty from the book of Daniel, I was shocked at the lack of modest language! I wouldn't want my children to hear such things. (I can't remeber exactly what was so appalling.) I've heard priests give talks about difficult subjects which are couched in careful words. I believe the inspired Word would have the same high regard for maintaining discretion.
A few months (or is it a year ago now), there was a good article in the Homiletic and Pastoral review by a Methodist? convert discussing the new translations and how they downplay the Catholic content of the Bible.
More and more I've been turning to the Douay Rheims version. I used to read the Ignatius but the lack of commentary is frustrating. (All my teachers loved the Ignatius Bible's language.)
Now, if I buy any bible commentary books it is the Navarre Bible.
It seems no one reads the New Jerusalem Bible anymore. It has the loosest translation from the original.

Okay, so does the Navarre Bible have the best commentaries?
I understand from the MODG board that Laura Berquist suggests using the Ignatius Bible due to lack of commentary so the student will discern for himself what the passsage is saying.
I'm a commentary sort of geek myself. The more, the better. My dh loves the Ignatius study guides but they are all separate booklets. He says they're the best yet, but he's not a scholar. I take it they are easy to read and easy to understand for a tired, working guy with little time to read.
Does the Douay Rheims have good commentary?

We use this bible Cay, because as all bible scholars will tell you the translation is hands down more accurate!
It is the bible used in the VAtican when translating.

When I was shopping for a personal bible for our eldest son's first communion, I was discussing bibles with a seasoned homeschool mother. She encouraged me to invest in a Haydock version of the Douay Rheims for the commentary and Douay Rheims for the reasons Katherine mentioned.
I found that Haydock bibles were either antique (and really huge) family bibles, or available as a
costly 2 volume set.
I just discovered that All Catholic Books is selling a Haydock bible in Hardcover in a pre-release for 35% off. It is probably quite large as it replaces the two volume set.
