Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Does anyone (Jenn ?) know of list of saints & their symbols? I looked at the one at CHC but it lists by the symbols & I'm looking for one that lists by the saints.

Thx!

Check out the Fireside Chat thread list. There is this same topic being discussed and Jenn posted a GREAT post about it, including a picture.

Brenda, I misread your request at first. It's very hard to find lists by the symbol, but easier to find by the saint. So at first I thought I couldn't answer, but then I reread!

The BEST online source for saints, new and old, is Patron Saints Index. Search for the saint and most of them include how depicted/representation.and their patronage. I regularly just do a Google search for "Patron Saints Index" and _Saint's Name_ to pull up the page quickly.

Just a note, that some saints don't have symbols. If you're looking for newer saints or less popular, they might not have specific symbols attached. So you have to look at their lives -- virgin, martyr, priest, bishop...all of these have certain symbols attached.

Another great reference is the book My Nameday, Come for Dessert by Helen McLoughlin. This is the online version, with index here. This will help you with symbols to use for the obscure or newer saints.

Some other links:
Saint Symbology
Symbols of the Saints in Art
Domestic Church: Saints and Their Symbols
Illuminated Ink Saints Symbols
Saints in Art
Symbols of the Saints

How about a quiz?

And this pdf file from the National Gallery of Art!

AND...I have this very old book from 1925 that I love to use, and I just found it online here!! What a fabulous find!

Anyway, that should keep you busy.

One more thought I forgot to mention. There can be more than one symbol for saint. Some have several, as you can see from this thread on the Apostles.

Cindy, to which thread are you referring?

Quoting myself, because I can't believe I found these in digital form. The two books I was going to recommend, that I use all the time for symbolism are

How to Distinguish the Saints in Art: A Practical Guide for Picture Lovers by Arthur de Bles and

CHURCH SYMBOLISM: AN EXPLANATION OF THE MORE IMPORTANT SYMBOLS OF THE OLD AND NEW TESTAMENT, THE PRIMITIVE, THE
MEDIAEVAL AND THE MODERN CHURCH
by F. R. WEBBER. This one has been reprinted.

Questia requires payment and/or registration. There is a free 7 day trial, and I've been able to work around the screen a bit to copy a few pages. I can't believe it, as I was going to scan some of these pages! The indexes to these books are goldmines for symbolism. I'm extremely excited...can you tell?

Hi Jenn

Just wanted to share a new title I picked up from a convent clearing recently. "Saints and their Attributes by Helen Roeder" Have you heard of it? It was publ. in 1955, it has headings such as 'Finger tips' then it will have Benjamin, Deacon with reeds under his finger-nails: Erasmus Bishop with wooden pegs under his finger-nails. Whoops didn't realise what I was typing till it did, picked at random oh well Sounds like shades of my mother
