I just saw the announcement of it on the love2learn blog spot and was wondering if you could tell us a bit more about it?
Is it kind of set up like a Catholic FIAR?
It mentions 52 books?! Is it a study guide for all 52 books or just a recommeneded reading list? What books?
I'm excited because I was just debating buying vol. 2 of FIAR, but I'd always rather buy something Catholic and this sounds like it might be the perfect fit.
Would you please toot your own horn on this and give me some more enlightenment?

It's definitely not FIAR -- it is much better than FIAR. It's a literature study guide with that interweaves Catholicism with the gorgeous picture books and discussion questions that Cay has included.
It really is a beauty!

HELP!
I'm a very visual learner!
Can anyone describe this "literature study guide"?
Is it just suggestions? A book list? An activity guide? A lesson outline for the books?
What would a week (which I'm assuming is the idea as there's 52 books?) using this look like?
Can we get an excerpt or sample to look at?
Thank you for tolorating my questions!

I can't wait either! Neither Cay nor Margot can make it to the conference but we got it worked out to have the book there.
BTW can I make a plea? If any of you are planning to come to the conference but haven't registered yet the early bird discount has been extended to next Weds. 5/10/06!
If you know you are coming but haven't registered yet could you please e-mail me and let me know? I REALLY need to get an idea of what the count for lunch will be. Thanks!

First of all, 4Real is built for "tolerating questions" -- that's why I'm considered a legend, I ask so many!
First, Cay has a list of all the books (both primary and secondary), broken down chronologically for each month -- with the relative holydays, feast days or other liturgical celebrations woven in.
Second, Cay has an annotated listing of these books. A short summary of the book and the reason she included it.
Third, Cay has taken each of the 52 primary books and creasted a 2-4 page study guide for the book. For instance for the book, The Holy Twins by Kathleen Norris and illustrated by Tomie dePaola, she notes the feast days of St. Benedict and St. Scholastica (Feb 10 and 11). Cay then gives 20 vocabulary words, five discussion questions, copywork example, and then finishes with a "Parent's Help Page" -- observations that you can use to lead your child's study of the book, answers to discussion questions, and then enrichment activities (trace the Cross of St. Benedict and place it in the Liturgical Year Notebook or build a "St. Benedict's Ladder of Humility").
For each book these things are different, but that would be the basic format.
It is not like FIAR -- you don't read the book for 5 days. It is purely a literary study with Catholic overtones.
Does this help you visualize the book?
There is also appendices -- marian feast days and apparitions, prayers that might be useful with the various studies (for example,St. Francis Peace Prayer), how to integrate with Seton's Art 1, how to integrate CHC's A Year with God, Pro-Life information (for October's "Respect Life Month"), and blank outline maps for placing Saints, apparitions, etc within the context of geographic area.

Well, since you asked...
I think Mary's did an excellent job of describing it.
Mary, your review at love2learn was music to my ears.
I do hope everyone else is pleased with it. Really, I'm not sure Mary saw the *whole Mosaic* with all the artwork  . I'm honored that she got such a complete picture with just the text part that I wrote.
Margot at Hillside Education took the reins and ran with this project. She embraced it from the start and, I think, turned it into a beautiful Mosaic within itself. She even supplied an artist to do a mosaic print for each month and page borders. The individual book covers are done in full-color.
My intent is to get parents (educators) excited about the illustrated books that are coming out today and get children excited about their Catholic faith.
Since it has taken me over an hour to jot this little bit down and the kids are wanting to go for a walk, I'm going to pull an excerpt from the book (this is the unedited "What is..." The edited version is under my dh's email.) Email problems, don't cha' know.
I truly hope Mosaic will *fill a gap* as one reviewer stated.

What is the Catholic Mosaic?
Catholic Mosaic is a book study of various Catholic illustrated books that are brought together into a design which illustrates the whole liturgical year. I do want to mention that, as we have noted in other conversations here, it is impossible to compile the vastness of Catholicism into one book. This book is a springboard using illustrated books as a launching pad. I'm already seeing my short-sightedness of vision and finding new thoughts and ideas I wish I had added. So no book is ever finished...is it?
That's where boards such as this come into play. We can discuss and share the books together and turn them into our very own mosaics...and our children can claim them as their own.

Cay, I didn't see the whole finished mosaic -- my pre-press version was without the illustrations and other graphics that I'm sure help this book.
But without the graphics, I culd concentrate on the text and what you were trying to accomplish -- which I believe you did beautifully.
No book should EVER be considered the definitive answer -- I just really think you've hit on something wonderful and I think others will agree.

I used it with the K-4th graders this year at our co-op (some parents included reviews on the back cover of the book) but I'm a strong advocate that illustrated books are for ALL ages, not just children. But you know that already, Tracy. 
Also, this is a guide for the parent. So have no guilt buying it for yourself. The children find the beauty in the picture book. They rarely need extra motivation. The parents are the ones who have to retrain their eye and their thinking towards finding the secrets inside the mosaic of pictures. This book is for the teacher and child inside us all.

Yes! It will be sold at the MN conference the first week of June. I will also be at the IHM the following weekend. Then I have to stay home and can the beans and make zucchini bread and hang out with the kids! I've been trying to post images from it to the hillside blog for several weeks now but my computer hasn't been cooperating. You might keep checking there to see if I get it to work anytime soon.
I'm so pleased to see Cay's idea come to fruition in this book - it's beautiful.
