Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Ladies,

My family and I are going to MN for the first few weeks of December and I hate to lose our family tradition of Advent books but there is no way I am lugging all those books with me! Does anyone know of a great read aloud that would take a couple of weeks that will be great for Advent?????

I was thinking that maybe I could get a short story anthology or something along those lines. We will be extremely busy with Nutcracker right before we leave so I want to purchase something now.

Any ideas?

We love to read Jotham's Journey (there are 2other books in the series also.) There is a chapter for each day of advent.

Leanne

Addall has a number of very cheap copies, just uncertain as to the booksellers postage rates.

I do have other recs for older children, thought I'd posted them but haven't . I'll hunt up titles for you in the next few days.

Here is one for now, The Christmas Mystery - Jostein Gaarder (thanks Mary G). Good review at Amazon.

Mimi,

The one book that comes to my mind is an OOP Vision Christmas book, but that doesn't help you Can you fit in a small collection of your best books?

Sacred Heart Books has it for $11.95.

ETA: orders over $25 ship free (though probably not overseas) and shipping is very quick usually. ALso fun to check out the clearance there....

I've got a few ideas.

I'll put myself in the minority and say I don't like Jotham's Journey or the companion books. But they are an option.

::Jesse Tree by Geraldine McCaughrean (I don't like this one much, either, though)
::Advent Storybook has been recommended by a few members here, but I haven't seen it.
::The Christmas Mystery as mentioned above, I did enjoy, but we haven't used it here yet with the boys.
::Destination Bethlehem is written by Catholic mother and daughter. We used this alongside the Biffi books last year and really enjoyed it.
::Biffi Books, Introduction to the Liturgical Year, and Way to Bethlehem. I spread out the reading during Advent.

I would also look at some of the Tomie DePaola collections as a way to keep reading.

::Joy to the World is a collection of 3 of his stories and Christmas carols, The Night of Las Posadas, The Story of the Three Wise Kings, and The Legend of the Poinsettia.
::Early American Christmas is OOP, but a variety of stories.
::Hark! A Christmas Sampler by Jane Yolen, illustrated by Tomie is a great collection.
::Christmas Remembered is less of a picture book, but full of stories about his Christmas traditions and memories. Definitely for the older bunch.

I'd take the time now and check out some of these titles, maybe from your library, and see what would work for your family.

Now, I didn't even touch on the story collections and other ideas. I have to dig them up on my bookshelf. I'll be back!

I'm back with a few more ideas. I know you're looking for one, so I'm not helping the situation....

Suzanne kindly bumped Advent Reading for Strong Readers which has a few books I was thinking of adding here.

::The Story of Holly and Ivy by Rumer Godden
::The Trees Kneel at Christmas by Maud Hart Lovelace

Some other collections with wonderful illustrations
::Jan Brett's Christmas Treasury which contains
The Mitten, The Wild Christmas Reindeer, Trouble with Trolls, The Twelve Days of Christmas, The Hat, Christmas Trolls, and The Night Before Christmas
::Take Joy! The Tasha Tudor Christmas
::A Time to Keep: The Tasha Tudor Book of Holidays

You mentioned Minnesota and the first two weeks, and I'm wondering if you could possible focus on some themes, like St. Nicholas, Immaculate Conception, Our Lady of Guadalupe, or St. Lucy.

Not sure if the place you are visiting would have more Swedish heritage, but St. Lucy and Scandanavian traditions about Christmas might be fun to read about and then have your visit spotting or finding things that are part of these traditions. That's just an idea. I always love this catalog for inspiration. I have several books I use for St. Lucia's day.

St. Nicholas books: These are larger collections that you could read many different stories
::St. Nicholas: The Wonder Worker by Anne E. Neuberger
::The Real St. Nicholas: Tales of Generosity and Hope from around the World

Various Stories:
::Christmas stories by Ruth Sawyer. These are mostly out of print, but you can read one book online, This Way to Christmas. There are also other Christmas legends in this link[/url]. I have another one of her collections, The Long Christmas
::Told Under the Christmas Tree: An Umbrella Book OOP, collection illustrated by Maud and Miska Petersham

Catholic Calendar and Customs:
::OOP, but the Vision Book Christmas and the Saints by Hertha Pauli is very good.
::OOP
46 Days of Christmas: A Cycle of Old World Songs, Legends and Customs by Dorothy Gladys Spicer. There are 27 chapters, illustrating different traditions and feast days all over the world. Includes poetry.
::OOP Christmas Crafts: Things to Make the 24 Days before Christmas by Carolyn Meyer, pictures by Anita Lobel. I wanted to throw this one, although a craft book, every day has a little short story and then a craft. Although a secular book, I'm amazed at how closely the crafts and stories follow the liturgical calendar. I have to admit that sometimes we read cookbooks or craft books and don't necessarily make things right then, but are inspired for later.
