Feast Day - November 13
It seems we don't have a dedicated thread for St. Francis Cabrini - as the first canonized American saint, I think she deserves one of her own. And I'm looking for ideas!
This year I am making a special effort to plan some activities for our local homeschol families centered on Mother Cabrini. She has connections to Colorado having come here in the early part of the 20th century to start a school and orphanage. There is a shrine here that is a great pilgrimage site (anyone who came here for World Youth day in 1993 may have memories of going up there - I know a couple of you have shared that with me  ). An older church here also has claims to her involvement and presence there - Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church. There is also a newer church here named after her. We are going to be going on field trips to these locations and also doing some activities.

Vee has promised me a Mother Cabrini paper dali by the feast day.  I plan to use that as one of our activities.
Also, I'm going to have the students make a small replica of this Sacred Heart formed out of stones. Mother Cabrini and her sisters made this one (picture below - heart appears upside down) on the Sacred Heart hill which is now part of the Cabrini Shrine here. I also want them to make individual ones in miniature - gluing small stones on cardstock. I'm thinking of using aquarium pebbles. Does that seem like it would work.

Wow, Mary! Terrific compilation.
I would highlight the patron saint of immigrants. If I was studying her for a longer length, work in Ellis Island, some of the picture books about immigrating (They Were Strong and Good and Grandfather's Journey are two that come to mind), becoming an American Citizen, poor immigrants in this country.
Aquarium rocks -- wow, that would be tiny. I think I would use something a bit bigger. I love the idea! It completely rocks!

This will show how much I know...we don't have an aquarium. I did think there were different sizes of aquarium rocks, but are they all the tiny ones? I do want small so they won't be too heavy for the paper, but not tiny. I'm heading to the store this afternoon, so I guess I'll find out.

As an immigrant, St. Frances Xavier Cabrini is one of my favorite saints.
Children might want to map the different places that St. Frances Cabrini visited, especially the various states, and learn what she did in each of them.
While in Seattle, Mother Cabrini became a U.S. citizen.  She founded a convent, school, orphanage (Sacred Heart Orphanage), and a hospital here. The hospital building is close to where my husband works, but is no longer a hospital. The Sacred Heart Orphanage and school is now [Sacred Heart] Villa Academy (an independent school). The land for the school and orphanage was donated to Mother Cabrini. I was told by a friend that a recognized miracle took place in one of the school's rooms.

Christine - that's neat. So many US cities/states can claim her with a personal connection.
Here is a picture of the craft I'm going to be doing with our support group tomorrow. It is the "mini" version of a stone Sacred Heart I pictured above.
I have directions for it at my blog. And the aquarium stones ended up being the perfect size for this.
And I found this posting from someone here in Denver. It has a nice tour of the Shrine and history of Mother Cabrini video.

 - there are different sizes of stone. So just pick one that seems like a good fit. Definitely the smallest ones wouldn't work well or would be so tedious to place.
